Personal leadership has four world class, basic components. In addition to having fun at yesterday’s brutally hot track meet, i spent time at the beginning and end of the day preparing for Thursday’s (second) post-Disney speaking engagement.
The four world-class leadership basics are:
Vision
Involvement
Accountability
Commitment
Paint a clear, concise and compelling vision of the future. Get people involved by training and developing them. Hold them accountable for excellent results. And commit to being inspired and inspiring all day, everyday.
A 15-year old Disney leadership flashback applied to yesterday.
Last week while in Denver at the Authority Rainmaker event, an email from Orlando:
Are you available next Thursday May 21?
A former client has initiated a request for my Disney consulting services. Had no idea of the details last week, but in the past three days we hammered everything out.
Then yesterday a call. “Jeff, we are postponing the session for two weeks. One of the leaders in another department passed away from a sudden heart attack.”
Stunned. Saddened.
We worked through this and then before hanging up i asked:
If the speed limit is 55, how fast can i drive before you would become uncomfortable? And let’s assume 100 would be reckless. He said somewhere near 85.
My job is to rattle the cage of every person in the room.
Dear Son, when you look back on these years, may you find the constant lessons you received from me remarkably helpful. And may you smile from the keen understanding that the lessons were from action, not theory.
Completing the packing yesterday for a trip that begins tomorrow means that today the traveler doesn’t need to worry about packing.
A brief, simple call yesterday, even though i have a Four Seasons Denver confirmation number, provides a peace of mind that was easy to guarantee.
Small actions demonstrate personal leadership more than any book full of theories.
