Be observant for open doors (or windows)

This brand new bedroom window does not stay open.

Be observant for open doors (or windows) (or any opportunity that opens).

Generally, we reap what we sow.

Sow observation.

Make it a habit.

Like brushing your teeth, using please and thank you, and fastening your car seat belt.

No thought whatsoever.

Great habits yield great results the same way poor happens yield poor results.

Even with limited intelligence a person can easily do the math on this proposition.

Being the hungriest has its advantages

personal, motivation
You are the CEO of You, Inc. Motivation is your second greatest asset.

There is always going to be someone as hungry, and probably hungrier, than you.

Being the hungriest has its advantages.

It’s what has allowed me to get to where i am.

It’s what potentially allows others to take my spot in the business category i claim.

Anyone can sign up for this unfair advantage

scoreboard
Tampa Catholic had an unfair advantage – they played better as a team for the first three quarters. Above: score at start of 4th quarter.

scoreboard
In the fourth quarter, we outscored Tampa Catholic 14-8…too little, too late.

Here’s a sign you never seen hanging in a lawyer’s office,  a High School lobby, or a cable service provider’s headquarters:

We have an unfair advantage: WE CARE MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE.

Easy to promise.

Anyone can make this promise.

Literally impossible to live up to.

But if you did it, it would work.

More than any other skill or attitude, this is what keeps me (and most people in general) coming back.

Good luck today, with what you do for a living.

Leadership is such an underused competitive advantage

Leadership is such an underused competitive advantage. Everything rises or falls because of leadership. Talent is important, and so is teamwork and drive.

Carving out time to think about this is rare.

You are the CEO of You, Inc.

Your leadership deserves reflective time to decide how and what you spend your time thinking about.

Why?

Because what you think about drives what you do.

i used to spend a lot of time doing the wrong (lower priority) things right.

Now for example, i carve out two hours every morning to get ready for a single day.

Over-focus on the same things others under-focus on or ignore.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Find Your Edge

Blog? Are You Kidding Me?
Blog? Are You Kidding Me?

How’s the health of your competitive advantage?

If it is anything less than excellent, then you may want to consider what I’m about to suggest, and here’s why:

  1. Has minimal start up costs
  2. Can be done virtually anywhere
  3. Can be done virtually any time
  4. Can be done alone
  5. Progress is easily measured
  6. Provides multiple benefits when done regularly

That’s the key message today. Why would anyone avoid a low cost, incredibly flexible way to improve your edge.

You absolutely need an Internet presence. If you tune this out, you’re in big trouble. The same kind of trouble if you ignore a bad health report.

The easiest way to enhance your edge is to blog. If you don’t know how, there are tons of free online “how to” articles.

GoDaddy has 35 million domain names registered.  GoDaddy has seven million customers.

I’m one of them.

Will you be?
