Common sense isn’t too common

Disney Keynote Speaker
Removed prices yesterday, in an experiment with a Speaker Bureau. They have asked me to sign an exclusive contract with them. Removing public prices helps their cause. One small step…i can always go back.

When in doubt, just take the next small step.  – conventional wisdom

Chasing India

bead jar jeff noel
So much commitment, discipline, vision, and forethought. A $10 investment in a bottle and a small bag of plastic beads, and one-hour roundtrip drive to the craft store.

(warning, not short, but certainly pithy)

Seventy-five (75) months without any revenue.

Would you give up?

And spending $1,000 per month, all 75 months – would you stop?

Would you even make it three-plus years (and $36,000 in the hole) like this let alone six-plus years?

This post is also being written on an iPhone as i walk four miles roundtrip to the gym this morning.

Received an email before heading out the door – the Speakers Bureau agent said he is “chasing India”, in response to my request for a client update.

The fee on the table is 1/3 my former annual Disney salary.

For one speech.

So yeah, mind-boggling.

To say a clear, concise, compelling vision is the single most important blueprint in your 19-point organizational architecture, is, well, the understatement of your career.

Without that type of visioning, giving up seems like a viable option after a “reasonable” amount of time.

One of the hells no one knew i was going through (2008-2014) was the uncertain and lonely entrepreneurial journey to start something.

Something that may not work.

Something that may never pay the bills.

And to this very morning, there continues to be no guarantee next year will be a profitable year.

When the students are ready, the teacher will appear

Backstage, minutes before walking onstage. What you see are dozens of small screens that make up the large screens.

Too excited to sit down.

You get used to the spotlight. Not a fan of being in the spotlight unless there is a room full of willing students.

When the students are ready, the teacher will appear.

What we really want is change, right?

Disney trucks
Three Disney trucks, all with animated digital side panels.

When you are talking with a client, ask:

  • What change are you seeking?
  • Who will change?
  • Why will they change?
  • How soon will they change?
  • How does the keynote speech ensure the change you seek?

Remind your potential client the reason they’re wanting a live presentation and not a memo or meeting is that your closeness, your energy, your karma, and your humanity are catalysts.

Sparks if you will.

Fire starters.

Public speaking is our greatest fear

Disney leadership speaker
Most of us are not professional speakers.

Public speaking is our greatest fear.

It’s an ingrained human fear even greater than the fear of death.

Yet we speak all the time.

Day to day living requires a functional adult to speak with others.

And if you’re a leader, you’re expected to do more than speak, you’re expected to inspire and motivate.

Watch and listen to people who you enjoy listening to and people who bore or offend you.

What is it that each group demonstrates that you could practice on your own and become better at speaking day to day?
