Playing it safe is risky

Untuckit store in Orlando
If shoes change dramatically, so will everything else. Exciting. Risky.

Playing it safe is risky.

Looking to retire a lifetime wardrobe of Disney business suites for something new.

Why?

Old school thinking (business suit and tie) is now my choice to embrace or discard.

i’m in charge of everything.

Everything?

Yes.

Such as travel structure and processes.

Think simple, lean, easy, scalable.

To structure travel using only a small day-hike backpack, drastic changes need to happen.

To stay active while traveling, i need running shoes.

To also carry business dress shoes is cumbersome and redundant. Why have two pairs of shoes for a short trip?

This means being onstage in running shoes.

This fundamentally changes everything about my personal brand.

Can you imagine me speaking for Disney Institute in running shoes?

Better late than never

Disney Springs
i remember when Disney Springs was vacant land, next to Disney Village Marketplace (DVM). My wife started as a Merchandise Hostess at DVM.

Better late than never.

You know why i always worked for a big company?

Because it’s all i knew.

It’s what literally all my friends did or still do.

And i believe that the experience gained was indispensable, i also believe i could have been more entrepreneurial working in a big organization.

Except for one thing holding me people back.

Fear.

Fear of getting fired.

Fear from taking risks that others were also afraid of taking.

At this point in my life, the thought of not being my own boss is nauseating.

Only if most of your thoughts are original

Disney Innovation Speakers
Preparing for a 45-minute Keynote Speech.

If most of your thoughts are original and you’re thinking for yourself about what to do next and in the future, you’re a leader.

If most of your thoughts are, “How can I find somebody to tell me what to do and what to think about next?”, you are functioning as a manager.

Are you a manager who is afraid to do your own thing because you’re not spending time thinking about the future?

This defines the difference between a manager and a leader.

Managers are not thinking about how to make things better now.

Managers are thinking about the status quo – how to maintain the current level of output.

In essence, managers are waiting to be told by someone.

Managers are waiting on someone who has a guarantee.

Managers are waiting on someone who will get blamed if something doesn’t work.

Managers don’t want to take a risk.

What if fails?

What if i get in trouble?

To do something that has never been done before and goes against conventional wisdom…this is not the thing a manager signs up for.

Do something every day that is new and unknown

Sanibel Sunset
Last night.

Sanibel Sunset
Last night. Lots of birds.

Do something every day that is new and unknown.

Three nights on Sanibel Island is a first in over 30 years of visits.

We’ve never been here in November.

Several unique circumstances have us remaining in Florida this Thanksgiving week.

The cooler temps, the lower sun rotation (no need for sunscreen), and the cold sand have shown us a new and different Sanibel.

Why waiting to get picked is a flawed proposition

VIP Disney parking
Yesterday after lunch. Heading to Main Street USA.

Disney's Emporium
Disney’s Emporium logo.

Disney Cast Pins
Yesterday at The Emporium, had a delightful conversation with a 32-years of Service Cast Member, and a Walt Disney Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

Magic Kingdom parade
Magic Kingdom parade is at 2 o’Clock instead of 3 o’Clock during the holidays.

Here’s what i learned about waiting to be picked.

It’s never gonna happen.

You can wait decades.

It still won’t happen.

The solution?

Pick yourself.

True or false?

i’m going to finish my fourth fiscal year away from Disney earning more and doing it in half the time.
