Working hard to not work so hard

Working hard to not work so hard. i cannot recall the last time i didn’t work seven days a week. It may have been 1998, the year before i joined Disney Institute. When i became a “teacher’ of the Disney Way to executives and staff at the world’s most admired companies, something inexplicable happened.

i discovered that i was born to teach.

And learning how to become a great teacher has never felt like work.

Personal leadership 101:

Live your life so that if anyone ever says anything bad about you, no one will believe it.

It’s a very intentional choice.

And to be very intentional, you’ll need to over manage things you used to under manage or ignore.

Tough?

At first, but once you’ve done it long enough for it to become a powerful habit, you have now actually created something (a personal brand) worth defending at any cost.

Clutter kills our career passion

Disney ESPN Sports complex
We had a moment when we realized we were driving through Disney World to go to our High School Homecoming Game, also at Disney.

Clutter kills our career passion.

Are you a victim?

Why do i ask?

The final 15 of my 30 years at Disney were spent speaking to over one-million people global through Disney Institute. One-third of the 2,000 clients i personally interfaced with were in Healthcare.

And now as an entrepreneur, the percentage is even higher. i love healthcare. The reasons (which no one cares about) are varied, many, and inspiring.

Here’s what i saw in a dream recently:

Can we put love back into medicine?

Is the goal of healthcare to make money or to extend the healing ministry of “Love”?

The clutter (competing priorities, not fixing poor leadership, not being intentional about everything) in the workplace keeps great organizations from caring for their culture. And once the culture is diseased, there’s little anyone can do.

However, there is a last resort, and it comes, ironically, with a price – call or text me (407-538-4341).

It’s the same for all of us

Disney Instructional designer and Disney professional speaker
These two met in 1999 and have remained thought partners ever since. Photo: yesterday outside the local grocery store.

Everything i do is either going to raise my average or lower it.

Same with you.

The choices we make.

The effort we put in.

The things we read.

Our thoughts.

Our dreams.

The people we hang to with.

Leadership isn’t about maintaining our average output, it’s about making our output better.

An output much better than anyone, including ourselves, believes is possible.

It’s your responsibility to set yourself on fire

Steve Jobs Mid Life Celebration phone
Did Steve Jobs have a premonition about Mid Life Celebration?

It’s your responsibility to set yourself on fire.

Period.

If you’re on fire with the passion to do excellent work, congratulations. And thank the CEO of You, Inc.

If you’re not on fire with the passion to do excellent work, good luck with influencing the CEO of You, Inc. You can’t fire her.

It’s really critical to say the obvious.

Anyone who has succeed at this has done so because of one reason. They have refused to let bullcrap excuses – the ones we all have – determine their destiny.
