It’s pretty useless

It’s pretty useless to try to be someone you’re not. Arm-chair quarterbacks are not real players, yet they can critique what they watch on TV as if they could have done it better.

Same happens to those of us who read and believe the business theories.

My life changed when I stopped evaluating business and leadership from the sidelines.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

This is rarely talked about and therefore rarely addressed

Highland Trail Hike
It was indescribable to make it this far.

Highland Trail Hike
Never saw this view until last night.

Highland Trail Hike
Never saw this angle before either….and in the back of my mind as we made it across the treacherous portion…i didn’t know if i could make it back.

Highland Trail Hike
Wow. i have to make it back. Otherwise, it’s an 11-mile walk to the closest road access.

Fear holds leaders back. And it holds leaders back their entire career. Overcoming is the DNA of exceptional leaders. This is rarely talked about and therefore rarely addressed.

And like a summit, it’s a continuous journey.

It literally took 30 years for me to figure this out.

The harsh reality for people who dislike demanding bosses

Disneyland book
Walt Disney had his moments like every leader does. He wasn’t always happy with the way things were going.

There’s a harsh reality for people who dislike demanding bosses. The demanding boss doesn’t like being demanding. If accountability is clear, then results should follow. When results don’t follow the boss has to do something to ensure the results happen.

That plan b that the boss has to go to is often perceived as demanding.

Now imagine if you delivered exactly what you and the boss agreed on.

There’d be praise instead of pressure.

Tell me again who’s fault that is.

Accountability, Disney-style

car accident
Driving home from the gym yesterday afternoon.

Car accident
Clear expectations: always drive the speed limit, never (ever) tailgate, no texting while driving, on time is 10 minutes early – never speed to make up for being late. Clarity. Agreement.

Accountability, Disney-style…

This is about two simple yet overlooked ideas:

  • Clarity
  • Agreement

At Disney, the clearer a leader is about what’s expected, the better the end results. Gaining agreement means there’s no misunderstanding. Misunderstanding are rampant, insidious, and cause tremendous damage – to culture, morale, financial results, customer satisfaction, productivity, etc.

Clarity and agreement also includes consequences and repercussions from dishonoring the agreement.

A long list, but is there a silver bullet for Leadership?

Quote about change
Action. Good, thoughtful and intentional action.

A long list that comes down to one powerful leadership thesis.

The criteria most use to describe why they admire a certain leader center on characteristics, traits, experience, talent, competencies, skills, expertise, and competencies.

But is there a leadership silver bullet that summarizes the whole volume for being a great leader?

It starts with an i, but it isn’t integrity.

It’s intentionality.

Great leaders over-focus on the same things other leaders under-focus on or ignore. It’s about being intentional where others are unintentional.
