On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

If McDonald’s copied Apple’s marketing vibe

Insanely clever, understated humor.

Who couldn’t use a smile or decent chuckle at work?

Insight: Apple has a signature (branded) formula for their new product announcements. The director captured that brilliantly.

McDonalds on the other hand, has created an unmistakable brand built on grease and “secret ingredients” covered in bread crumbs.

Two world-recognizable brands.

Two distinctly different emotional connections.

Seeing what no one else sees and seeing more of it

Nassau, Bahamas port
There are countless distractions in a Cruise ship port, all of them intended to get you to impulse buy.

Bicycle at Nassau port
Walking past a bicycle like thousands do every day.

Bicycle at Nassau port
Walking past what everyone walks past but seeing something no one else sees.

Bicycle at Nassau port
And not only seeing what no one else sees, but seeing more of it than no one else sees.

Yesterday when we hid Janice’s birthday cake in the Senior Living Facility communal kitchen and my first thought was, “Look at all this table space. This would be a perfect place to lay out all seven story boards and get started.”

Disney really honed my thinking. i wasn’t thinking about the storyboards, but in seeing the large table space, i immediately remembered the opportunity and possibility.

Can’t turn it off.

It’s a blessing and a curse.

Six days away from launching the next big thing

Disney Institute team 2009 in Chicago
Deeply indebted to my colleagues at Disney Institute. Here are some of them in 2009, in Chicago.

Six days away from launching the next big thing.

Back in the day, the thought of writing a single Disney book felt overwhelming.

But with…

Growth.

Confidence.

Purpose.

Now, the goal is seven Disney books.

Wait until you hear the timeline for this impossible goal.

Pretty scary.

The world famous company fell flat yesterday

Southwest jets
Leaving BWI to fetch a cab.

University of Maryland advertisement
Inspiring University of Maryland advertisement, and, Jack the Teddy Bear.

The world famous company fell flat yesterday.

Did they do something blatantly wrong?

No.

Then what?

They simply didn’t do the basics for which they’ve become famous.

It would be like going to Disney World and the Park was dirty. Assume all the Cast were exceptionally courteous, but the place wasn’t clean.

The flight was fine, it just wasn’t special. At all.

Zero “fun-factor”. Zero laughter.
