Been at least a decade

Woman at marina
From Friday Harbor, Washington State, while we were bicycling for our honeymoon. Interesting fact: Our honeymoon was the year after we were married and just before we got in the car and drove to Orlando and Walt Disney World, to work for the next four decades. Note: Retired after 30 years to start Mid Life Celebration, LLC and mom retired after 36 years, a month before Covid, without knowing what Covid was.

Met your Mom in an interview.

dad

Been at least a decade since i interviewed someone.

Like riding a bike.

Yesterday‘s post here at junglejeff.net shared a bunch of questions that i asked yesterday in my first interview since at 2014.

It was fun.

Insightful.

Important.

The candidate’s answers sounded too perfect.

i texted the CEO to tell him i would like to do a second interview.

Happy present moment.

Yee-haa!

Tease out authenticity

Jack the Teddy Bear and the bead jar
We we’re just here. Maybe 4-5 days ago. Photo: maybe 4-5 years ago.
May 14 message to Patrick. A client’s high potential leader.
5-second video: #truly Note: A hot and humid morning. Sweating simply from walking.

Daring to be different looks good on paper and in dreams. Being different makes you vulnerable to criticism and judgement.

dad

A client’s message: “Tomorrow the bullseye would be for you to ask some questions that would tease out how this person authentically thinks about culture.”

Some question brainstorming to add to an already .think .different set of C-Level candidate questions:

Where did you grow up? What was your life like before becoming a Huskie? Why Seattle?

What do you do for fun, hobbies?

What’s your favorite place in the world? Why?

Where do you see yourself in 30 years?

How will you describe yourself to new employees? Direct reports? Peers?

Who are your professional partners? Tell me what you know about them.

2 Post it notes activity.

How do you frame up creativity and innovation to your organizations?

How do you frame up training and development to your organizations?

How do you explain the difference between a vision statement and a vision?

Tell me what you know about the CEO.

Tell me what you know about me.

What is the meaning of life?

When does the workday begin?

Tell me about work life balance.

Talk to me about risk taking what are some of the biggest risks you took and why?

Who was your favorite leader? Why? How did they develop you?

Have you, or could you, teach an organization about culture, a.k.a. organizational vibrancy? What would your executive summary be?

Why become Company’s CEO?

What’s your superpower?

How do you explain the difference between a manager and a leader?

What are some things that you do that when you do them you never think about the clock?

When’s your funeral?

Any questions?

i asked the current CEO for this structure: You, 15 mins, me 15 mins, you 15 mins. He replied he’s already spoken to the COO candidate three times. Immediately i thought, “When were you gonna tell me that?”

Backyard wildflowers
‘The Meadow’ has grown over the years.
22-second video: The view has never changed over the years. The Rocket launching frequency has though. What are the odds you return from a week in Montana and without knowing, our local news says the launch is commencing. The odds are good.

i remember driving to Cocoa Beach in 1982 after a midnight Disney shift and sleeping on the beach to watch my first Rocket launch.

dad

Once, we didn’t have cars.

Once, we had dirt roads for horses and buggies.

Once, we didn’t have Rocket Ships.

Once, long ago, a Rocket launch might be once every year or two.

Once, we thought there’s no way Rocket launches would be common.

Nature’s leadership academy

10-second video: Perfect weather means the water is glass and the temperature is warm.
19-second video: What’s not to love?

Nature only teaches willing students.

dad

When the student is ready the teacher will appear.

Often times, take Nature for example, the teacher is always there. Even when the student isn’t ready.

And so it goes.
