Organizational culture insights

Culture is what people think and do without thinking.

Culture runs on energy.

Energy must be constantly replenished.

Yet it rarely is.

Why?

Because everyone is busy.

And so it goes.

And cultural vibrancy wanes. Even to the point of sickness.

And organizations simply default to getting used to surviving in an unhealthy environment.

Leaders must understand this context. You see, employees have a deep understanding of their reality and an unerringly accurate perception and predictability to what will happen and why. This applies to all the diverse, daily circumstances.

Employees, at every level, know how the company will react, with few exceptions.

Employees need a deep sense of self and of belonging. Without feeling a deep sense of leadership commitment, they band together to survive. And leadership becomes the “problem”, not the antidote.

People have always asked me, “What was it like working at Disney?”

To which the most accurate answer is, “It depends on your leader.”

Most leaders have no idea how much their direct reports think they are not walking the talk.

Walt Disney on product differentiation

Walt Disney and the Tiki birds photo
(Photo: Disney blog) Walt said aim for perfection, settle for excellence.

Were does jeff noel’s zealous attitude for excellence, details, and being the best you can be come from?

Directly from the DNA of Walt Disney.

Walt Disney wanted the audio-animatronic birds to breathe. He wanted their chests to inflate as their lungs filled before beginning the next chorus.

Our Imagineers told him him it was too much perfection, the audience wouldn’t see it.

Walt told them, “They may not see it, but they’ll feel it.”

The biggest challenge any organization must overcome is how to get their employee culture to pay attention to the smallest of details – details lost on the visible eye. Details that if no one sees it, is it still worth it?

Details that make you different, and better, than your competitors.

Walt Disney taught me to give it 100%

Disney's jeff noel quotes
The repetition with this photo is 100% intentional.

What if all our hard work and preparation only results in reaching one person?

Would we still do it?

What if that one person was our spouse or child?

Would we still do it?

What if we don’t work hard and the result is we reach no one?

Would we be satisfied with our effort?

Would we find peace, contentment, and joy in not trying harder than we are capable?

Walt Disney taught me to give it 100%.

Everyday.

All day.

We might set the world on fire.

We might not.

Live like you mean it.

What criteria is used to validate a “Disney Expert”?

Disney expert, speaker, consultant jeff noel
Disney expert, jungle jeff, intentionally cut off in this photo.

What criteria should be used to validate a “Disney Expert”?

Safe to assume Disney experts get that way from being immersed, for a lifetime, in Disney Culture.

So there are Disney trivia experts, Disney pin-trading experts, Disney history experts, Disney food experts, and on and on.

If someone were to write a book entitled:

If Disney Ran Your Life: The Owner’s Manual to Creating Personal Magic

What would make them an absolute expert authority?

Would working there for a lifetime be pretty close?
