Dear Son, thank you for last night’s extended conversation

Disney Keynote Speakers
So yeah, in this photo, i’m thinking this may be my last view of Logan Pass. And i’m aware there could be many more, but i am living as if 2018 is my last Summer there.

Things in your life will either be better than you expect or less than you expect.

We do not have a crystal ball to tell us exactly how the future will unfold.

This is called a blinding flash of the obvious.

But this little gem, below, isn’t obvious (even though it is)…

When “bad things” happen, rejoice that good things also happen – and in ways that are much better than we could have imagined.

Focus on this yin and yang.

Both extremes teach us.

Be a great and grateful student.

Why?

Because if you aren’t, think deeply about what you get as the opposite.

Your career is about making as much money as you can

Disney Institute speakers
From a Google search last night using “Disney Institute”.

Your career is about making as much money as you can.

Until it’s not.

And trust me, it’s not.

A You Tube clip featuring an interview with my former Disney Institute colleague Scott Milligan. Scott’s life ended tragically.

i’m fascinated by the work results of setting a 10-year deadline

i’m fascinated by the work results of setting a 10-year deadline.

i knew when i made the 10-year plan it included retiring from Disney at 55 and doing my last five years on Earth as a small business owner.

The small business component was driven by two things:

The desire to not be on the road while Chapin is in High School.

The belief that i could make a bigger impact outside of corporate Disney.

i was right.

Why?

i trusted my gut.

And i’ve been really lucky.

None of this was part of the plan

Disney Hilton parking lot
The Hilton on Hotel Plaza Boulevard was literally empty last night. And the reason i took the photo was to remember where we parked, not to highlight the business downturn.

Benihana table
Hilton’s Benihana table for eight, just like at Epcot., a few miles down the road.

Orlando Magical dining
Orlando Magical Dining is from August 25 through October 1, 2017, at various local restaurants, but none of Disney’s official restaurants partake in the program.

Benihana heat vent
Benihana heat vent…it caught my eye.

Benihana heat vent
And i immediately made the comparison to Teppan Edo at Epcot’s Japan Pavillion.

None of what happened was part of the plan. We simply had a reservation for 6pm to have a nice Japanese meal.

We arrived early, were seated right away, and by 6:45pm we hadn’t met our chef.

By the way, none of the chefs were Japanese.

It made me think how that would fly at Epcot.

(It would crash and burn.)

Anyway, Chapin and i (Cheryl was in Pennsylvania) agreed that if our entrees didn’t begin by 7pm, we’d leave.

He had homework.

And an hour is a long time to wait in your seat.

Six minutes to spare, at 6:54pm, our chef began, and we enjoyed his style and our meal.

We did agree to skip dessert to save time and i had the check taken care of before we finished our entree.

Looking forward to returning to Teppan Edo.

It’s our Family favorite “Disney” restaurant.

Last night’s experience was good.

It was not very good, and it certainly wasn’t great.

Good and very good aren’t good enough.

Everyone’s in sales doesn’t mean much until it does

Notes to myself
Note from 3 days ago. Originally the flight was $400 but i wasn’t sure i should go. Then it jumped to $725 so i waited a week. Down to $575 (above). So i jumped on it but booked the wrong dates. Was able to cancel it.

Here’s who i’d like to meet with:

  • Kalispell Chamber of Commerce
  • Xanterra GM Mark Ducharme
  • Columbia Falls Chamber of Commerce

Fingers crossed.
