32-second video: Upstream from the roadside overlook. We crossed over McDonald Creek two miles downstream from this spot. Near the video’s end, you can see Cheryl, who adds some contextual size to the rocky terrain.

Certain ‘easy’ hikes are some of our favorites. McDonald Creek trail is a perfect example.

Dry at the start. Feels good so far.

Saw Granite Park Chalet with my naked eye. Zooming with the phone confirmed I wasn’t crazy. It helps to know the vicinity of Granite, otherwise, you’d never know it was a building. No one is expecting a building to be deep in, next to the Continental Divide. But i do.

We had ponchos but we choose not to wear them.

Why?

Our hike was a get-to-do, not a have-to-do.

Over my should is a giant ‘Grease Monkey’ roadside sign. The book on my lap is from Grease Monkey’s lobby ‘library’. A $120 oil change was covered by Enterprise (Alamo) Rental Car.

As real and as close as it gets without being hit.

Hurricane Helene was brutal to many regions.

We know the brutality firsthand, and all too frequently.

Glad our son is home to handle things in our absence.
