What good are Company perks if we ignore them?

What good are Company perks if we ignore them?

Employee benefits are meant to bring joy and happiness to employees and their family and friends.

We humans have a habit of postponing today’s joy because we are so busy. We promise ourselves we’ll cash in on those joyful moments when the timing is right.

As they say, “No time like the present”.

There was also an orchestrated Magic Moment at Disney University’s “Company D” store. It included a Disney Cast happy birthday wish and concluded with Donna selecting her choice of a Cast exclusive Disney trading pin, compliments of Mickey Mouse (as far as she knows).

And perhaps the icing on the cake was seeing Mickey Mouse three times at DU. It was unexpected (and delightful) even for the “tour guide”.

While we could have snapped photos of Mickey there, we chose not to out of a deep respect for Disney’s Corporate Culture.

Insight: Not all perks are genuine. Some are meant to manipulate. Today was 100% genuine. Thank you Walt Disney.

The teen asked the dad, “Are you high?”

The teen asked his dad, “Are you high?”

Dad, “Yes. High on life.”

Unintentionally fell into a huge reduction in caffeine intake while visiting out-of-state family over Christmas break.

Plus, 13 years alcohol (and smoke) free.

Plus breaking free of the corporate leash. (even though it was a labor of love)

Getting regular, adequate rest.

Here’s what chemical dependance hides from us: our body creates it’s own high once it realizes we are committed to it.

There’s no happiness in the future

Magic Kingdom before Park opening

Spent 30 years on the front line, eventually understanding the front line is where joy reigns.

There’s no happiness in the future. Yet we bank on it anyway.

What the heck?

Seriously.

Ask yourself to prove this doesn’t apply to you.

Self reflection?

Look around at the people above you on the org-chart. Are they ridiculously happy?

(Pause for the reflection and crickets.)

It’s why all personal efforts to get promoted began being shunned in 2004.

Houston we have a (money) problem

(photo: Last night at dinner a block from hotel. Big is better? Portion size? Paycheck size?)

Houston, we have a problem because the ladder we are climbing is leaning against the wrong wall.

The reason we begin the corporate climb is because we liked the way we thought we’d feel when we’d have a higher position and therefore greater respect and admiration from others.

How’s that dream working out?

The higher we go, the farther we get from using our first love, our wheelhouse…

They are the rare exception: The people who go on to become incredibly great leaders.

We may know a handful, or less, personally.

Never underestimate the power of joy, versus the drive for status and comfort.

Funny thing about what people really want

Walt Disney Legacy Award recipients
Never saw this honor coming. Not in a million years. To personify is great wealth.

Funny thing about what people really want. We start out believing it’s a great paycheck.

Money to purchase the things we want to own and do the things we want to do.

Eventually we get it.

(more or less, hopefully)

And then realize life ain’t about the money.

It’s about autonomy, mastery, and purpose – which allow us to make a positive dent in the Universe.

To personify Walt Disney’s good and decent and lofty values.

Which makes us rich.
