Walt Disney RIP: Dec 15, 1966.

There has never been another Company that has historically demonstrated a world-class approach to customer service as well as, and for as long as, Disney.

The fact that Walt led Disney for 43 years (since 1923) and has been gone for 49 years is a testament to the foundational principles that Disney continues to maintain and perpetuate.

To outsiders it may seem like a “Mickey Mouse” operation, yet Bob Iger’s vision is to become the world’s most admired company.

When i retired from Disney last year, we were ranked #6 (and climbing).

The second “real page” in the workbook says:

Lead like you mean it.

The world needs great leaders.

PS. Leadership is not a title, although it can be. The leadership i’m talking about starts with the person in your mirror every morning.

How important is new employee orientation?

Yesterday, lunch meeting at Disney University.

 

Q. How important is it to conduct new employee orientation as the very first day (no exceptions) of work for newly hired employees?

A. If an organization doesn’t immediately set context for everything else that will happen in an employee’s career, what is at risk?

Seriously, let that sink in for a minute…

  • New people filling in the blanks by guessing
  • Making assumptions about priorities and focus
  • Questioning why their questions aren’t anticipated, and answered without having to ask
  • Feeling like the slick marketing doesn’t live up to the real thing
  • Setting the tone that winging it is acceptable
  • And on and on

Disney over-focuses on this question and insists that every new employee (Cast Member) attends Disney Traditions, every new employee’s first day of work.

The day is spent building an emotional connection to the Disney company culture that by the end of that first day, it’s something everyone wants to defend.

When done with excellence, that feeling should last a lifetime.

Brand, in layman’s terms, is your reputation.

Brand loyalty is the sum of everything you do and say.

It is also the sum of what you don’t do and don’t say.

My personal brand emulates two companies.

  1. Disney, where i spent a lifetime honing my platform, from Disney’s Chief of Staff to Disney’s Cleaning Staff.
  2. Apple, the company that builds the tools i need to change the world and help others to do the same.

There are individuals (not companies) that i also emulate: Jesus, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Gandhi. Assuming you know that Walt and Steve are on this list too.

Audacious isn’t always a bad thing.

 

Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone in 2007 and told the audience…

We wanted to make a leapfrog product that is way smarter than any mobile device has ever been and super easy to use.

The biggest problem with smartphones was the user interface; the keyboard. It cannot change from application to application and if you come up with a new button you can’t add it because the phone has already been shipped.
