Well of course you are

Gapingvoid art
Metaphorically speaking, you need to want change as much as you want your next breath. From Gapingvoid Art.

You and your organization have major challenges.

You do not want an expensive solution.

Nothing you’ve tried so far has stuck.

You may have become numb to the drag of your survival and reaction mode.

Your organizational culture is you greatest ally or your biggest roadblock.

Right now and for the foreseeable future (and maybe forever), it’s a roadblock.

You think you need to fix your leadership.

You think you need to fix your customer service delivery.

There’s only one person who will insist you rethink those two obvious categories, plus the three other categories everyone ignores.

  1. Your pain will get worse before it will get better.
  2. Or, your pain will get worse and it will never get better (and never stay better).

These are your only two options.

Could you thrive living on the fringe?

Could you become the best in your category, or, could you become so amazing you create a new category – a category of one?

There’s no one else in the marketplace that will approach common cultural dysfunction issues with the same business karma.

i do not fail.

i can not do the work for you.

You will not succeed without me.

You have to be willing to be Cortes.

No guts, no glory.

Be intentional about turning people away

Disney's Boardwalk Resort art
Oh look, a real live miniature horse in the palm of his hand. Photo: Disney’s Boardwalk Resort lobby art, yesterday.

Say this to yourself (a couple time if necessary)…

i do not copy what’s out there and i am never going to please everyone.

The biggest commitment you will ever make is this one:

Do i want to be the best in the category or do i want to be the category?

Setting the bar low and reaching it is not the same as setting it ridiculously high, failing, but knowing you gave everything.

The paradox of unmet needs at work

Disney College Program Alumni weekend
Was one of the first Walt Disney World College Program interns.

Our pain and discomfort are caused by unmet needs.

This can be motivating. It can also be demotivating.

Choose which beast to feed.

An entrepreneur’s three biggest competitors

Apple Watch reminder app
During yesterday’s run, an epiphany. Created a reminder using Siri.

An entrepreneur’s three biggest competitors:

  1. Curators
  2. Copycats
  3. Wannabes

Curators don’t have their own platform, but they are good at telling us what others have done. The downside is they have no context for the full story – they were never on the inside, never on the front line, never behind the scenes, never privy to the secret reality that outsiders will never know. Nothing is ever as it seems.

Copycats are good at studying and mimicking. They appeal to those easily convinced.

Wannabes are former employees who have gone out on their own because they couldn’t stand the glass ceiling. They are not prepared enough (and never will be) to match the world class karma of their former employer.

And then there are the artists, who operate as a category of one. These folks bring something unique, refreshing, compelling, and inspiring.

The gift of freedom to learn your own career lessons

CEO vs janitor
We laugh – and point fingers – but it’s profound.

The gift of freedom to learn your own career lessons.

CEO’s are vulnerable because they get handled. No one wants to point out the CEO’s blindspots or weaknesses because of the assorted socially perpetuated hallucinations about how doing this is bad for your career.

PS. You are the CEO of You, Inc.
