This news is celebratory, but the timing is confusing

Have you reached the pinnacle level known as expert?

Only one person in the entire room of 300 knows what he knows.

This was his last session in his current capacity.

Nervous

A half-hour has been blocked at 3:30pm today to gather for jungle jeff’s ‘Disney years of service’ award. Thirty years at Disney used to be rare back in the day. Most of the people receiving that milestone were hired as part of the opening team in 1971 or hired shortly thereafter.

You felt privileged to be in attendance at their special recognition.

Nowadays, 30 years isn’t such a big deal.

Unless it’s you.

Then it’s pretty surreal.

While 30 years at Disney isn’t rare, 30 years with a single organization in 2014 is.

The nervous part?

Hard to explain.

They aren’t clueless, although prevailing evidence suggests otherwise

Her boss wants her to write a bunch of examples showcasing how great her performance was for the past year.

She really doesn’t want to do it because:

  • It will not influence her pay
  • No one will ever read it after the annual work review is completed
  • Shouldn’t her boss already know how amazing she is?

A once a year performance appraisal is perhaps one of the biggest crocks in the western hemisphere.

When a teen violates a curfew, the parent doesn’t wait until the end of the year to go over it.

Parents are very busy people, just like bosses.

Figure it out people. Figure it out.

Atypical boss and subordinate conversation

Bill Bowerman office door

Subordinate: My job is to be the deepest thinker in the classroom.

Boss: Quietly listening. (unsure if what she just heard makes sense)

Subordinate: I work with CEO’s, executive teams, front one employees… everyone in an organization. My job is to rattle the cage so to speak. To get people to think differently. If they walk out thinking the same way they walked in, we didn’t need to have the class.

Boss: … (still no verbal response)

Boss: … (thinks her subordinate is a zealot, says nothing)

Everyone in big brand organizations talks about demanding excellence.

Few people, at any level, actually do it.

Why?

Because it makes others uncomfortable.

This is especially true for front line employees. They have no power to lead the way. Bosses feel uncomfortable when a subordinate is working above reproach.

Takes guts?

The executive consultant said of the many sessions he’s seen around the Country, the one yesterday after lunch was the very best… “by far”.

Knowing your wheelhouse and staying focused on it is elusive to many of us, because the traditional expectations are to “do it all”.

Designing your personal organizational structure – priorities and processes – is no different than what we must do at work.

Very simply, we must ensure organizational structure is architected for world class results.

Rethink?

Takes guts?

Totally.
