Madrid Disney Creativity Keynote Speech

A rare backstage look at how i begin to prepare for a speech…in this case, more than four months in advance.

Madrid Disney Creativity Keynote Speech is in five days. Four months ago the framework (photo above) was laid out and the client approved.

We are expecting 1,000 attendees.

The speech is scheduled for 50 minutes, but it’s mapped for 45. Better yet, map it out for 40 minutes. Rarely does a conference start, and stay, on time.

Son, it’s easier to add a story or activity than to have to remove an important component minutes or hours before you speak.

My speeches are methodically intentional with specific insights, relevant stories, and excellent activities.

To have to take a strategic insight, story, or activity out means the speech’s DNA has been tampered with.

Son, this is a perfect example of over-focusing on the things i used to under-focus on or ignore.

i also clarify in advance if the conference is behind schedule and i start late, do i still take the agreed upon speech time.

7 tips for your first TED Talk

Disney characters at Glacier National Park
Still having photo upload issues. Rob will be here this morning and hopefully we can resolve it.

Summary:

1. Tell something new

2. Evoke contagious emotions

3. Tell a story (be personal)

4. Don’t lose the audience (jargon, etc)

5. Start strong (viewers are easily distracted)

6. Think globally (does your view make sense globally)

7. Practice (a lot)

My TEDx AUK Talk is a powerful and paradoxical catalyst to entirely (and easily) change the way we serve others.

Why is it important to be reminded or enlightened?

Walt Disney picking up trash
Back in the day, we hadn’t yet added the word please. Why? Excellence is a journey, it doesn’t fall from the sky.

Why is it important to be reminded or enlightened?

A positive catalyst is always helpful. Sometimes a negative catalyst proves equally as effective.

In prepping for a keynote yesterday, i am inspired to create questions regarding the speech’s leadership business insights.

Why?

To illustrate, with the audience’s words, not mine, how critical (and how simple) it is to apply the insights versus simply being familiar with the concepts.

Possible questions:

  • Why does knowing this matter? What grade do you earn daily, weekly, monthly on your delivery?
  • What, if anything, do you gain from this photo? (Photo is a Disney trash can inscribed with, “Trash Please”)
  • What do you do with the obvious fact that your behaviors drive how your employees treat your customers?
  • What do you do with the obvious fact that your employees’ behavior drives your customer’s brand loyalty?
  • What do you do with the fact that your customer’s loyalty drives long-term profit more than anything else you do?
  • Is it acceptable to downplay, and discount, common sense?
  • How do you feel about the second three-legged stool?

TEDx Talk in Kuwait

Disney TEDx Speaker
On average, overnight success takes about a decade.

TEDx Talk in Kuwait is being proposed for late April by my agent, Thinking Heads.

Here are some notes for the proposal:

Assumptions:

  • 12-16 minute speech
  • Clear, concise, and compelling idea
  • Universal application
  • Easy and immediate implementation
  • Inspiring

Thesis:

  • Personal and professional vibrancy is overwhelming because our goal is incorrect and going the extra mile to reach the goal is a flawed proposition

World Challenge:

  • To simplify and scale exceptional service for everyone we encounter, every day

World Solution:

  • Unveil the blinding flash of the obvious that aiming for satisfaction is dangerous
  • Revealing the paradox of going the extra mile by illustrating going the extra inch

Bonus:

  • Issue a 72-hour challenge for the audience to implement the ridiculously easy solution of going the extra inch and to teach it to others

Ultimate outcome:

  • Make our world an exponentially happier and more vibrant place not only for the recipient but also for the giver
