Will we spend a lifetime holding back because we are afraid to go first?

Tell the truth painting
The truth can set us free. It can also hurt us. We must decide.

Just had a moment…

Skimming through some LinkedIn updates it occurs to me that we may be habitually dwelling on quotes and idealistic stories from great companies, as well as the latest research studies on high performing teams.

And then instead of using this to initiate healthy change in ourselves, we use it as another unhealthy brick added to the wall that holds us back for “being the change we wish to see”.

Instead, we find one more piece of evidence against our dysfunctional leadership team. One more reason to laser focus on the change that’s not happening with someone else.

Will we spend a lifetime holding back because we are afraid to go first?

And will we never notice the daily missed opportunities?

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Will we look back with regret on our career choices?

Listening to Lee Cockerell’s most recent podcast yesterday, i was struck by one thing in particular.

Lee expressed regret for being so professionally driven, and i had never heard him say that before.

It was in answering some of Joe’s questions that i reflected on the significance of these decisions:

  • Made a conscious decision (2007-ish) to not pursue any promotions at Disney Institute
  • Quit drinking in 2001
  • Began running in 1999
  • Became Catholic in 1999
  • Was grateful that our life savings was spent investing in parenthood, with zero guarantee between 1995-2001

Joe is seeking out positive-minded people to surround himself with.

These secrets have no way of ever being discovered

Where would i be if i had not written the first sentence in 2009?

Although it took 30 years to write the first sentence, it only took two more years to finish my first book.

And once it was finished, it took two more years to get the guts to publish it.

All told, a 34-year project.

Where would i be if i had not begun?

Publishing a book is a big deal until you do your first one, then you understand some secrets about life that you would have never discovered.

These secrets have no way of ever being discovered if we wait and do nothing.

Career regret is a rite of passage

Candy counter
Easy choice.

Vegetable counter
Tough choice.

There are too many things that need-to-be-done to ever get to the want-to-get-done pile.

Our life inside the corporate machine consumes our time. We become polished at remaining calm under the constant work pressure. This unrelenting pressure ultimately beats the dreamer out of us.

Gone are our youthful ideals about how to thrive and contribute to work that matters.

And along this well-worn path, we sacrifice regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest – all in the name of climbing the ladder.

Simple doesn’t mean easy, but it does mean simple.

At home.

Here, there, everywhere.

All day.
