Leveling up, work

Used to park here (where i’m standing to take this pic) when i worked at Disney’s Contemporary Resort from 1985-1990.

Walking by at eye level it’s easy to miss this ‘hidden Mickey’. But from the western Main Building rooms, it’s stunning.

Same spot as the previous photo, simply doing a 180.

Never kept track.

Positive reinforcement.

Gifting others with it.

What was different last week is the audience.

All my positive reinforcement went to new people. A combo of Disney and Disney Institute Cast Members and my client’s special team he brought to Disney Institute.

The newness of the audience facilitated daily, marginal leveling up. Why? Because many were people i was meeting for the first time.

Note: The exception is the CEO.

Big decisions, work

Making that 2008 command decision to retire in 2014 was semi-easy.

The motivation was compelling. Do not squander your son’s final four high school years by being a constant globe trotter for Disney Institute.

This looming decision to permanently quit working is familiar in its potential impact. The key word is ‘potential’. There are no guarantees with potential. Only possibilities, no guarantees.

Note: The original early-retirement catalyst was the 2008-09 USA Real Estate and Banking collapse. This led to Cast Member reductions (aka terminations). For the first time in my 25 years, the reality that no one is safe struck hard. Decided the over-focused thing would be to create a Plan B should the worst ever happen again.

Why does this matter, work

Context: This is a conversation in my head with a former client.

This is crazy obvious to me. Probably lost on you. No offense. Just (relentlessly) trying to be helpful.

If you had chosen Disney Institute 10 years ago, do you have any idea…

How many Facilitators, Sr. Facilitators, and Business Advisors you’d go through in a decade?

How many times the “new” helpers (staff) would have to start from scratch, after reading some summary notes from previous helpers?

How many times you would have to explain where you’ve been, where you are now, and where you want to be?

How much detail, big picture, nuance, trials & tribulations, triumphs, all hands on deck organizational ‘saves’ you and your team have been through.

How much time your family has spent with the new helpers.

Etc, etc.

Insight: Relationships are key. Knowing the owner is 10x better than being passed around over the years. Or maybe i’m alone in seeing it this way. Or, maybe i’m hitting the bullseye.

Yesterday you said, “Tomorrow”. Today is yesterday’s tomorrow.

Bonus:

Last year you said, “Next year.” This year is last year’s next year.”

Jeff, we can feel your pain, um, discomfort. Or maybe it’s better labeled imbalance.
