Putting yourself in the path of progress increases your value

Yesterday after Saturday morning brunch at Cracker Barrel, six miles from home.

Putting yourself in the path of progress increases your value when it comes to real estate.

It’s the same with leadership and vision.

Envisioning the future and taking calculated risks to prepare for the opportunity to be in a great position requires something special.

Patience, determination, and preparation.

The long way eventually becomes the short cut.

Here’s to hoping you have a clear concise, and compelling personal vision for 2016.

My vision has always revolved around working in Central Florida. Having lots of frequent flier status (like in the past) is not something i’m interested in. In 2015, had only one engagement outside of Florida.

Never direct anger or impatience at your waiter

Main Street USA balloons
Yesterday.

Never direct anger or impatience at your waiter.

Why?

Because they can spit in your food, or worse, and you’ll never know.

Now, what’s the leadership analogy?

At any level in your organization, from CEO to front line leader, if you’re a jerk (even unknowingly) to your people, they will do the equivalent to spitting in your food.

You’ll never know and the joke will be on you and it will manifest itself in your organization’s culture – and you’ll never know why you can’t fix it.

One of Disney’s most compelling leadership precepts

Windermere Prep School
Yesterday, waiting for our son at school.

One of Disney’s most compelling leadership precepts:

Be active and visible

People see you around everyday they start trusting you. Once they trust you, they’ll start telling you what’s going on. Until then, you get handled and fed what they think you want to hear.

To be clear, if you are not active and visible, you know how this stereotype ends:

The only time our leader comes around to our area is when ________.

Usian Bolt and personal Leadership lessons

So close at the finish.

2015 World Championships 100m final
One one-hundredth of a second between gold and silver

While there where four Americans in yesterday’s 2015 World Championships 100 meter final, i was rooting for a Jamaican.

It doesn’t make me unpatriotic.

It makes me human.

Maybe that’s part of our challenge, we worry about how things have been done in the past.

What if sports were more about what’s possible (in this case winning three consecutive world championship titles) than what country we root for?

The thing about Usain Bolt is that he’s a great human being.

It’s easy for me to forget he’s a Jamaican. In fact, where he’s from doesn’t interest me.

His ability to become a category of one is the real story.

It inspires entrepreneurs and startups to believe that there is hope.

Hope is key.

One world.

One color.

One goal.

Peace.
