Beware the well-worn paths

Epcot’s Voices of Liberty, in red, are holding their microphones in the hand corresponding with their place on stage. No one knows nor cares, except Disney. And me.

Beware the well-worn paths.

They never lead to breakthroughs.

Beware the dark, shadowy paths too.

The dark paths are the ones that eventually lead to breakthroughs, but on the journey much, if not everything, can be lost.

Learn to be a risk taker the same way you learn to save and invest money – slowly and a little bit at a time, over time.

The magic of compound interest for financial growth, sprinkled with faith, in the historically highest return, is stocks.

Non-financial and non-threatening, but uncomfortable risks using confidence, these investments will pay the highest “confidence” dividends over time.

Setbacks should be expected

Embrace personal struggles and opportunities, it’s how we learn and grow.

Setbacks should be expected.

Like the recent meeting about a giant business move forward.

Two days ago, the meeting was cancelled hours before it was to start.

Why this is stressful is because the project is already painfully behind.

The cancelled meeting makes it worse.

Like the college freshman, being able to confront the bad things – my fear and doubt – is significant personal growth.

We can become overconfident to the point of a blind spot.

What?

Our success rate with confidence, and plowing through fear and doubt, may just have a cancerous growth we can’t detect until it can not be ignored.

All of a sudden, we are faced with a business challenge that shouldn’t exist and now it’s so big that it drags the rest of the business down.

The power of sincere feedback

College dining hall
Turned around last night to grab a photo of where we just finished eating dinner.
encouraging text message
This encouraging text message about my new Podcast arrived while we had dinner in Baltimore last night.

The power of sincere feedback. And i quote:

“Your joy is so pervasive in your delivery.”

A positive blind spot.

Didn’t know.

Why?

No one told me before.

It’s a hope that listeners feel it. Yet without validation, all you can do is wonder.

First time talking about non-Disney topics

control
Be careful who you let hold the microphone too.

Yesterday walking to the gym i listened to this podcast for the second time in as many days.

Give myself a C-grade at best.

Why?

Inexperience.

Lack of intentionality.

Going with the flow was a risk and i trusted and followed the lead of an experienced podcaster.

Prior to this the three times i did a podcast, it was with Jody Maberry.

Jody and i have a three-year history of talking regularly and we even spent time together hiking in Glacier National Park.

First time with Mike Simmons. First time with someone other than Jody. First time talking about non-Disney topics.

Blessed are the late bloomers

High School basketball
An eight-grader (#3) started last night’s varsity game. His brother also made varsity in 8th grade. That was two years ago. he’s #23, starting point guard as a 10th-grader.

Blessed are the late bloomers.

You and me both.
