i love this place

i love this place. i love this moment.

Every Cast Member learns on Day One the supreme goal of all customer interactions. And then we talk about the bullseye every day for the rest of their Disney career. Disney is not even remotely interested in hitting the target. The bullseye is the only goal.

Note: During my Disney career from 1982-2014, never once called a Guest a customer. Using customer in this post to speak the language of ‘outsiders’, the unindoctrinated.

That’s the goal isn’t it?

7-second video: There’s a special relationship between the Cockerells, Maberrys and the Noels. Special relationship between Glacier and Disney too. Note: Lee’s Main Street Window is above my head.

Walking through Disney University (DU) this morning had the chance to chat with a Cast Member in the DU lobby.

She began her 41-year career in 1981 at Magic Kingdom Food and Beverage.

After 21 years in F&B Ops, she’s spent the past two decades in Training Operations, including the past year at DU.

On the walk home, nearing DU, this question came to mind…

Do you still feel like you did on Day One?

For each of us, that’s the goal isn’t it?

Enthusiasm is unfortunate

Merino wool is cleaned using fresh air. Anywhere from 14-30 days between soap and water washings. Travel hack for traveling light. Are you still enthusiastic about finding remarkably better ways to live?

Enthusiasm is unfortunate.

Why?

Enthusiasm, unfortunately, has no autopilot.

It does, however, have a fly wheel.

Like hitting the lottery, kinda.

  1. How engaged are your employees?
  2. How appreciated do they feel?
  3. How aligned are employees with your purpose?
  4. How satisfied are employees with your pursuit of your purpose?

Blinding flash of the obvious

Mickey Mouse Hat smiley face on dinner table cloth. Selling is the transfer of enthusiasm.

It is challenging to admit, but certain parts of business don’t work the way you think they are supposed to work.

Most people or companies you hire don’t have one-tenth of the desire and motivation you have for your business.

The insight is simple: you most find a million ways to work around this little known fact of life.

Note: When i say little known, i mean harsh reality as an owner. This is where hiring right-fit talent for a purpose bigger than yourself becomes a blinding flash of the obvious.

Emotional connections fuel loyalty

More truth. Yesterday at the gym.

Turtle crossing road
From this far away the turtle saw me and tucked in.

Florida Gopher tortoise
While she came out a little, she was never convinced i wasn’t there to do harm. i sat in the middle of the road for a few minutes and talked to her. It wasn’t enough.

Emotional connections fuel loyalty.

To create an emotional connection, something positive and unexpected has to happen.

Even the smallest positive gestures, if unexpected, are powerful.

If the positive thing was expected, it protects against delivering a negative experience, but, it doesn’t surprise and delight.

Magic happens when we are delightfully surprised.

However, meeting expectations, while decent, never moves our needle to raving fan.

When Ben at Thinking Heads emailed that he finally received the video clip, he added, “It’s excellent.”

He’s seen a few speaker videos in his two-decade career in the business.

To which i thought to myself, “Wow.”
