Mastering email

Email organization — Example of digital email folders.

Challenged him late last night to spend today and tomorrow getting some personal organizational structure in place, particularly with email.

Without digital email folders, email becomes much more difficult to master.

My goal with email has evolved over 20 years and last year took a dramatic leap forward.

i do not go to bed until all three folders are empty:

Inbox
Deleted
Sent

Am i serious? Yes.

Is it easy? No.

Am i able to do it? Yes, everyday for 13 months straight.

There’s a reason why i do not have an email subscription signup. Most people are buried by their email’s in-box. i do not write to build an email subscription list. Most gurus insist an email list is your bread and butter.

Only a few hours away from hitting 72-hours without a response from an important business professional.

Rather than be frustrated for the delay, i use my energy to pray that they are okay and that some difficult, and perhaps overwhelming, business challenge isn’t consuming their soul.

Does that sound like a goody two-shoes?

You know those people who you send emails or texts to and you wonder if they’ll ever reply to you?

You know those people who you email or text and you hear back from them so quickly it astonishes (and delights) you?

Your habits define which way people think of you.

It’s either scary or comforting to think about.

If you were a Disney leader, you would want to have a reputation for being responsive. It’s that simple. It is also incredibly challenging.

Overwhelmed by email?

The harsh reality?

It’s our responsibility to figure it out.

Period.

This constant overwhelm will not fix itself.

Left unchecked, it poisons our soul so slowly we never notice.

It’s been a month now that i drew a line in the sand and asked:

Can i go to bed each night with no emails in my in-box, trash, and sent folders?

Like nearly everything, the answer is yes if we chose to make it so.
