Work is worship

Couple nights ago at the Italian restaurant with our concert-going friends, our server shared an insight.

She said, “Work is worship“.

Being ever curious, i asked her to unpack it.

She started by saying in India where she is from, work is considered worship. She said work provides you the opportunity to provide for yourself and your family. She finished by saying something to this effect: We ‘worship’ this blessing.

i see it the same and differently…

What i see differently is when i am speaking and advising others through my work, i am blessing them with insight, wisdom, and most importantly practical, lifelong confirmation that my insights and wisdom are the best available for the outcomes i (and they) desire.

Learning’s reminder

LinkedIn leadership post about perspective
When you change what you see, what you see changes. Photo: Random, unknown post in my LinkedIn feed.

Learning creates confidence. However, learning initially exposes how much we didn’t know (but thought we did).

Learning reminds us to lean into our discomfort with being incompetent.

Bonus: Mediocre and poor are synonymous. You’re in charge of your learning and development and a half baked attempt equals the same thing as a poor attempt.

Culture works as designed

Funny bumper stick
During today’s 10 mile walk through my community, i saw this bumper sticker while walking through the Publix grocery store parking lot. It made me smile.

Culture works as you’ve designed it.

So, your culture isn’t failing, it’s working exactly as you’ve designed it.

Failing is synonymous with under-performing.

Want a better (or much better) performance culture?

Write a better (or much better) cultural design.

Envisioning the past

Envisioning the past.

But wait jeff, don’t you always say that “vision” is a picture of the future that is not only better than now, but much better than now?

Absolutely.

Here’s the cool paradox to this post…

We leave Australia on June 30.

We arrive home in Orlando (also) on June 30.

Fourteen time zones make for a unique calendar juxtaposition.

We gained a day traveling to Australia.

We ‘lose’ a day flying home.

Final 24 hours in Australia, work

college auditorium
We scouted out the venue the day before. We intentionally mitigated navigational challenges before any challenges could surface.
college auditorium
Intimate.
Two adults in auditorium
Almost ‘showtime’.
Blurry photo of college graduation
Here they come. The first two graduates have entered the back room.
6-second video: The third graduate is the one we came to see and honor.
10-second video: Sometimes a ‘chaotic’ clip can provide decent context.
11-second video: The opening kickoff.
19-second video: Graduates from the School of Business and Creative Industries.
16-second video: The third graduate.

Reflecting on the past three weeks and the next 24 hours, this is a dominating career thought….

Different is better than better.

To have strong courage to be different is the key to career vibrancy.

Tradition and dogma have their place in scaling high standards.

Paradoxically, tradition and dogma must be challenged for improvements to surface. And to make dramatic leaps in quality, tradition and dogma must be left behind.

Note: If Henry Ford hadn’t created his car manufacturing assembly lines, people of the time would have been hoping for faster horses.
