Career regret is a rite of passage

Easy choice.

Tough choice.

There are too many things that need-to-be-done to ever get to the want-to-get-done pile.

Our life inside the corporate machine consumes our time. We become polished at remaining calm under the constant work pressure. This unrelenting pressure ultimately beats the dreamer out of us.

Gone are our youthful ideals about how to thrive and contribute to work that matters.

And along this well-worn path, we sacrifice regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest – all in the name of climbing the ladder.

Life’s a…

90-year olds
Last night, two 90+ year olds, and a pup (a 60-year old).

Life’s a _______.

Fill in the blank.

Are the words or phrases we contemplate negative or positive?

Truth be told this is how we approach everything in our life.

Easy to deny.

If we deny it, it’s a huge and nagging blind spot.

It takes guts to go against the herd mentality.

We accelerate our personal leadership decline when we start taking it easy.

Leadership decisions will rarely gain 100% agreement

Teen and seniors
An ordinary moment yesterday.

Leadership decisions will rarely gain 100% agreement.

This is insidiously tricky.

When we want to please everyone we do not follow our instinct.

Yesterday my instinct said we need to get outside and walk.

But wait, our time with one of them is limited because he’s over in the adjacent nursing home.

Will we send the wrong message if we leave for an hour? Is it selfish? Is it right? Is it helpful?

When our health is something we are willing defend, we should never lose it.

Never, no matter the cost?

Making tough business decisions should be easy

Birthday candles
Yesterday’s birthday celebrations for 94 and 81 year olds, my mother-in-law’s neighbors.

Making tough business decisions should be easy.

Why?

Because making tough decisions never goes away.

To thrive in this harsh reality, as well as build, maintain, and enhance your brand, organizational blueprints are mission critical. Cultural architecture is another way of saying organizational blueprints.

Yesterday (Friday) a tough answer came in from an easy decision i made Monday. The special price offer from a (Lee Cockerell) referal came with structure conditions.

  1. A five day deadline opportunity to commit
  2. Upfront payment in full

The client declined.

Losing business on cost is the price that’s paid to build a reputation, externally and maybe more importantly, internally.

Do what you say you’re going to do.

Cashing in

post it note
Self-evident and irrefutable are my wheelhouse.

How old are you?

How much experience?

Are you cashing in?

Theoretically, each of us ought to be able to write a big check. After all, we have spent a lifetime honing our skills.

Here’s what the post-it says:

My model is based on what should be self-evident. If it’s not, i’m not going to try to convince you.

US Marine battle strategy.
