Is this the greatest leadership challenge?

Airport overflow parking at sunrise
Yesterday, like the day before that, and again this morning, began the same. Darkness turns to dawn. Dawn turns to sunrise. The sun moves across the sky. Etc.

Letting go of things that don’t matter may be the greatest leadership challenge we ever face.

Things.

That.

Don’t.

Matter.

They pile up and overwhelm us.

Horse, Jockey, Trainer, Owner

Red Tail Hawk in Orlando
Yesterday while running. Chatted and wished this bird of prey the best. Dude is looking into my eyes.

Horse, Jockey, Trainer, Owner.

Which is most important?

Final answer?

Ok.

Take two…

Same question, “Who’s most important?”, but this time it’s race day, say the Kentucky Derby.

Same answer?

Why or why not?

What does this mean to leadership?

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Must get ahead of her

Disney Customer Service Speaker jeff noel
Different version of third choice.

Must get ahead of her. She works several hours a day, sometimes more, and is steadily getting things done. She burns through the project list and ends up having to wait on me to make a decision(s) before she can proceed. Really need to stay ahead of her, since i’m spending money while she waits.

The clearer you are the better your results

Disney Patient Satisfaction Keynote Speakers
We filled the seats (300-400 each time) twice a day for two consecutive days, two to three times a year.

The clearer you are the better your results.

We assume if we cover the stuff in orientation that it will stick.

How’s that working out for you?

We remind the team in our annual company meeting and assume it will help.

How’s that working out.

All day.

Everyday.

All three shifts.

Every employee.

Imagine if you could instantaneously say in priority order, “Here are our top three priorities.”

Can you imagine this?

To get there you need to be…

Driven.

Focused.

Relentless.

Nothing disconnects a willing employee faster (and longer) than holding them accountable for something they didn’t realize was more important than what they thought you meant was most important.

Nothing sabotages world class customer service faster than a disengaged employee who thinks their leader is clueless.

Taking care of things serves us well

Taking care of things serves you well. Common knowledge, not common practice.

mind • body • spirit • work • home

Life’s five big choices.

These are the basic priorities that must be addressed daily in order to thrive.

And each of the five will have sub-priorities.

This is yours to figure out.

It is different, yet similar, for every human.
