Grit, at work

Handwritten Post-it note
When you process this from an optimistic (minus the word ‘undesired’) karma, great. When you approach it from the opposite (using the word ‘undesired’), it feels compellingly critical.

Grit is thinking about (and implementing) intentional, yet seemingly insignificant things when you’d rather not.

Leaders must fight

photo of TV show Lioness on TV
Recently began watching. Intense. Watched Season 1, episode 7 last night.

Leaders must fight for what they believe in.

It’s a harsh reality that makes sense to me.

Has made sense since i was a kid.

You want to set the school record for the 440?

No one is gonna hand it to you (or any one).

You want it?

Prove it.

Fight like hell.

Note: Held the Spring Grove Area high school 440 record from 1977 through 2023.

What is that?

Forty-six years.

Note: Fought like hell but it never felt like a fight. It felt right.

In Disney terms, this is how i define grit

In Disney terms, this is how i define grit…

Focus and discipline.

Focus on the basics.

Discipline yourself to never get bored with the basics.

Ridiculously simple.

Incredibly difficult.

Until it’s not.

Culture is the collective behavior of an entire organization.

Habits.

How much work?

Book publishing first steps
Flashback to making the commitment to publish my first book. PS. Didn’t use the software above, but it was one of the ones i considered.

How much work are you willing to do to get there?

Be specific about the tradeoffs.

You know how people say you should never quit your day job? i worked over six years at two-plus hours a day, everyday, without missing a day – on top of my full-time Disney Institute career traveling nearly every week.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.
