Unemployed, work

Disney retiree ID
It’s simple. i retired from Disney in 2014 to fulfill a purpose bigger than Disney. And now i’ve retired a second time after 12 years on my own, to fulfill a purpose bigger than working.

What does it feel like to be unemployed?

For starters, context…

Unemployed means retired.

It feels exciting to be ‘unemployed’.

Adventure is out there and we (Cheryl and me) are ready.

Carefree, work

Into ADVENTURELAND
Into ADVENTURELAND.

When in your final life-season, did you believe you were living a carefree life?

My first thought, “i can’t remember.”

Second thought, “It’s now my burning desire to chase it.”

Teaching The Disney Way is how i’ve made a living since 1999. Starting 2026, no more ‘making a living’.

It’s time to ‘work’ on chasing carefree…

To want nothing. To expect nothing. To depend on nothing.

To live in the moment.

Like a college student on Spring Break with a little spending money and a heart full of adventure.

Busy is not sexy, work

There’s a time and place. And most importantly, there’s context.

Why is being busy not sexy?

Why?

Wait, you haven’t figured this out yet?

No one on their death bed ever says, “I only wish I had spent more time at the office.”

Letting go of posturing, work

Is it possible to finally, for good, let go of habitual, societal posturing?

Started a new career and became a father around age 40.

Also received a serious health wakeup call at 40. Had been sedentary for years.

Began jogging one mailbox a day, for the first week.

Second week, two mailboxes a day.

Third week, three.

Fourth week, four mailboxes a day.

One month to jog the equivalent of one lap around a high school track.

Gradually added more distance.

All of this began when i started at Disney Institute in 1999.

Ten years later, i’m one week away from my Summer 2009 vacation. But it’s only me traveling. To Finland. For the 2009 Masters Track and Field World Championships.

After a decade pursuing physical vibrancy, i finally told my boss and one colleague what was going down. Had been working on the same team of people for a decade.

No one knew.

Never postured my physical achievements.

When i returned, never told others where i had been. Just kept running and going to the gym.

Career freedom is 2 things

Career freedom is 2 things:

  1. Not having to work to prove who you are.
  2. Not having to work to pay your bills.

This takes, from my experience, a lifetime to achieve.
