The power of a milestone or anniversary is easily lost

Disney's Town Square
World class organizational culture is by design, not by default.

Disney, and other “intentional” corporate cultures, use milestones to operationalize their culture.

The power of a milestone or anniversary is easily lost.

The simplest way to understand it’s power is to comprehend what’s lost when you don’t celebrate a critical milestone.

For example…

Tomorrow, December 30, 2016 marks the 15th anniversary of the last day i drank alcohol.

This is transformational for the person who drank every day for 28 years.

And when this post goes live on March 29, there are two days left to complete the eighth consecutive year of “5-a-day blogging”.

And this is transformational if you were the one who never wrote more than two consecutive days in a row.

It’s about being intentional where others are unintentional

Disney steps
Home themed after Disney. Intentionally.

Disney is currently the 5th most admired company in the world according to Fortune.

Disney’s success is driven by over-focusing on the same things others under focus on or ignore.

It’s about being intentional where others are unintentional.

Hubspot’s culture recipe

Take a deep breath and think about this for a second… Can you really work any harder?

No is the obvious answer.

But what if there was something that you could do in addition to maintaining your current hard work level.

Here’s a very complicated way to create a culture from Hubspot, click here.

Accountability, Disney-style

car accident
Driving home from the gym yesterday afternoon.

Car accident
Clear expectations: always drive the speed limit, never (ever) tailgate, no texting while driving, on time is 10 minutes early – never speed to make up for being late. Clarity. Agreement.

Accountability, Disney-style…

This is about two simple yet overlooked ideas:

  • Clarity
  • Agreement

At Disney, the clearer a leader is about what’s expected, the better the end results. Gaining agreement means there’s no misunderstanding. Misunderstanding are rampant, insidious, and cause tremendous damage – to culture, morale, financial results, customer satisfaction, productivity, etc.

Clarity and agreement also includes consequences and repercussions from dishonoring the agreement.

Every company has a culture

All companies have a culture, only the ones built by design sustain long-term growth.

Is this really true?

Think of it this way…

All humans are given a body but only the ones who purposefully use common sense to intentionally care for it sustain a higher degree of wellness.
