i’m not doing it right

Best Disney Conference Keynote Speakers — Not dressed for the part.

So much hype. So little time.

Either i’m an anomaly, or there’s a lot of stuff that isn’t necessary in order to run an entrepreneurial business.

So much advice on what you should do to be successful, yet i do very little of it.

Business is growing nicely, even though on paper, i’m not doing it right.

Only 364 days left to gather more business

My cousin asked how business was going yesterday, January 1. In hind sight, i wish i hadn’t gone on such a riff giving him so many specifics; maybe a simple, “It’s going really well.”, would have sufficed:

One signed Keynote speech contract
One Keynote speech contract awaiting signature
Two Keynote contracts looking very good
A verbal agreement for a 1.5 day engagement, with additional contract layers probable
Another client getting closer to a multi-layered cultural transformation engagement
And finally, several big, former Disney Institute fans who are seriously interested in working together this year

Torn between the lesson i’m learning and the product i’ll receive

Young entrepreneurs class — There are courses in entrepreneurial leadership. There is also a real life entrepreneurial course called “starting your own business”.

Torn between the lesson i’m learning and the product i’ll receive. As a small business entrepreneur, there are lessons in life that no book can teach because in life, the lesson is real, and it’s your lesson.

Paying a contractor by the hour versus by the project may not be the best choice. It is probably the best choice for a contractor, but for a customer (me), it may break the budget.

Time will tell, and i will accept what happens because i didn’t know enough before the agreement. i went on a hunch that everyone would end up being happy.

PS. Fast forward 100 days later to today…happy ending. i don’t contract with many people, and everyone i’ve contracted with has delivered exceptional quality. At the end of the day, you pay top dollar for great quality, whether it’s by the hour or a contracted price.

Creating this workbook is a great business lesson. Should you pay by the hour or by the project? i do not have the definitive answer, but i do know this workbook will be well over $1,000 to design. Learning expensive lessons comes with the territory. Especially when you hire the best people. There’s a decent chance this workbook will be a breakthrough. Breakthroughs generally are worth every penny you spend.

PS. After this was written, the printing cost alone was $50 per book for 40 copies ($2,000 plus $1,000+ to design = $3,000+). Each book had a tangible $75 price tag. i did not factor in any of my time, which would up the price significantly. The client will never know.

Montreal Convention Center — First AV check

Disney Customer Service Speaker — 600 people staring at you expecting you to be smart and funny.

Disney Customer Service Keynote Speaker — Keeping it simple is extraordinarily taxing because simple is easily dismissed as not valid.

First keynote speaking engagement outside of Florida since retiring from 30 incredible years at Disney. Which, by the way, has always been the plan – to be able to leave my driveway (to speak) and return to it the same day, without hopping on a plane.

Don’t know how i used to do it week after week.

Fly all day. AV check. Dinner. Review presentation (again). Sleep.

Wake. Breakfast. Review presentation. First one in the room for another AV check. Facilitate transformational content all day. Last one to leave the room. Dinner. Check email and do admin stuff. Bed.

Often, the above step is repeated several days in a row.

Wake. Maybe a run. Taxi to airport. Fly all day. Maybe home by dinner time. Maybe not.

Not home in time for dinner last night, Friday the 13th.
