It went better than expected

Disney Leadership Keynote Speaker
Last week at airport newsstand.

We carve out a life one day, one meeting, at a time.

Yesterday’s meeting with seven Healthcare executives went better than expected, and i expected it to go well. The client was thrilled with the content, the flow, the commitment. The fact that we have worked, extensively, together in the past is a huge plus.

All my speaking in 2015 has come from referrals, recommendations, or previous clients.

Regardless of what the Harvard Business Review shares in their front page article, i will always stick to what i learned, know, and do – based on a lifetime (1982 – 2014) as a Disney insider.

How did you used to do it?

Keeping it simple is extraordinarily taxing because simple is easily dismissed as not valid.

First keynote speaking engagement outside of Florida since retiring from 30 incredible years at Disney. Which, by the way, has always been the plan – to be able to leave my driveway (to speak) and return to it the same day, without hopping on a plane.

Don’t know how i used to do it week after week.

Fly all day. AV check. Dinner. Review presentation (again). Sleep.

Wake. Breakfast. Review presentation. First one in the room for another AV check. Facilitate transformational content all day. Last one to leave the room. Dinner. Check email and do admin stuff. Bed.

Often, the above step is repeated several days in a row.

Wake. Maybe a run. Taxi to airport. Fly all day. Maybe home by dinner time. Maybe not.

Not home in time for dinner last night, Friday the 13th.

Boring versus not perfect

ATT International text
Wifi is the best option. But that means no checking for messages as soon as you land. Weird.

Reliable (aka boring, because of it’s predictability ) versus something that’s not perfect, not reliable? Which would you pick? A reliably consistent speaker who entertains the audience and looks good onstage in their cuff links or pearl necklace? Or would you pick the unpredictable artist who is likely to say things that some might take offense to, or at the very least, listen in disbelief, while others – sitting beside them – have the missing link that launches their transformation?

Three thrilled clients and a list of other things

Disney Epcot Restroom. My client didn’t know why mirrors aren’t placed above sinks.

Moving the mirror (center wall next to exit) away from the sink helps Guest traffic flow better.

Three thrilled clients and a list of other things.

Looking back, yesterday was super productive (as are all days). Of course, the usual two hours of writing, reading, praying, and thinking before sunrise. Then a walking meeting with a potential client at 7:20am – around Epcot.

Then home for three client calls. One with a potential marketing partner, another with an existing client to review progress, and then a call with a potential 2016 client.

In between, daily admin stuff, and review of Thursday’s speech for the umpteenth time. Like an Olympic athlete visualizing their event.
