Disney’s PATA to CAST

Disney acronyms
Disney hiring acronyms.

Reflected on my wife’s illustrious 35-year Disney career. After her first year, she then spent 34+ years in Disney Human Resources.

Ten consecutive years in Disney Casting. Casting is the outside world’s equivalent to an Employment/Hiring department.

She was the Casting Operations Area Manager when we opened the brand new Casting Center along Interstate 4 in 1989.

During the next two decades, the hourly Cast hiring interviewers used an acronym to ensure they consistently covered the same four non-negotiables with every applicant. At one point, the acronym changed – why it took so long is anyone’s guess. Note the content didn’t change, just the way we remember it.

Disney’s PATA to CAST

PATA:

  • Pay
  • Appearance
  • Transportation
  • Availability

CAST:

  • Compensation
  • Appearance
  • Scheduling
  • Transportation

Change what you see and what you see changes.

Leading yourself?

Granite Park Chalet
To sleep here 15 days in a Summer of 90 days is absurdly over-focused. No electricity, no running water, no heat (nights in 40’s), no wifi, spotty cell signal, pit toilet.

Leading yourself?

If you’ve been habitually over-focused on your personal and professional development, you are not panicked right now.

Why?

Because the chaos the world is experiencing is normal for you.

You are always experiencing things that are uncertain, taking risks others could take, but never do.

You have already lived with deep fear and even deeper doubt. You’ve failed, learned, and improved. Over and over.

It’s part of your DNA – being comfortable being uncomfortable.

When you quit your job to start your business, you made do with limited resources, uncertain conditions and outcomes, as well as the psychological trauma of probably losing it all. Odds overwhelming do not favor startups.

The ultimate design for every living creature is to reproduce. And perfectly, there are beautiful and wondrous exceptions. Some march to the beat of a different drummer and contribute in endlessly special ways.

If Disney Ran Your Life podcast assumptions:

  • Personal vibrancy yields balance
  • High Disney-style standards will not be lowered
  • Participation in the 72-hour challenges is expected
  • Each episode builds on the previous episode
  • You must believe balance is achievable
  • You must teach what you learn and do

Ok.

These photos do just that.

Did you see what i did with the title?

Used a word from each of today’s previous three post titles.

Magic does happen.

If you over-focus on the same things you used to under-focus on or ignore.

Dream? Of course. Why? It gives us hope.

The Show must go on.

One of our (Disney) key world-class organizational principles is separating backstage from onstage.

If people knew how relentlessly hard we must work all day, day after day, people would not believe it.

It’s cool to be a business advisor who can help outsiders bring world-class Disney business principles to their own organizational culture.
