Writing advice 101

Disney Leadership Speaker
Case in point, Peter Drucker, thank you.

The goal of the sentence you’re reading is to get you to want to read the next sentence.

On a recent call with an aspiring future Disney Cast Member – who lives in New England – i was disenchanted by the sheer size and quantity of her cover-letter paragraphs.

i didn’t want to read her cover letter (i promised i would) because it looked so typical.

And boring.

Mind-numbing, really.

A week later, i finally mustered the patience and energy to tackle it.

Ugh.

My summary…

“I’ve loved Disney since I was a child.”

“My first trip to Disney, etc, etc.”

“I truly admire the Disney way.”

“I’ve always wanted to work for Disney.”

Typical.

Predictable.

Plain vanilla.

She took the feedback well yesterday.

Perfect.

It’s not the Magic that makes it work, it’s the work that makes it Magic.

Common sense.

Not common.

Staggering run of reading

Disney autograph book
Donna Flanagin, i need your autograph the next time i see you.

Perhaps the only thing that staggers my mind about writing for nine consecutive years without missing a day is the notion that someone other than me has (literally) read every post.

Thank you Donna Flanagin.

Here’s to “lucky breaks”.

In your spare time, Google “Disney Keynote Speakers“.

Any idea how challenging it is to be on Google’s front (first) page?

Literally impossible.

Why?

Everyone on the planet is trying to be in that position.

Thank you “five-a-day blogging” (every day for 8.5 years) for facilitating this “lucky” break.

There are still uses for laptops and email.

However, the reasons are becoming antiquated as we move to mobile, voice recognition (replacing the keyboard), and social media platforms.

For over a year now, i’ve been calling my iPhone 7 Plus my “laptop”.

Just two days ago, i ran my Disney Leadership Keynote speech from my “laptop” – an iPhone 7 Plus.

The downside was the Bluetooth functionality wasn’t great from the floor. It even had some hiccups while i was onstage. Plowed through it because i’m determined to be an early adopter.

As a professional, i had to hide the glitches from the audience. They had no idea. It’s part of what makes Disney seem so Magical – hiding the effort required to pull off a great experience.
