One of Disney’s most compelling leadership precepts

Windermere Prep School
Yesterday, waiting for our son at school.

One of Disney’s most compelling leadership precepts:

Be active and visible

People see you around everyday they start trusting you. Once they trust you, they’ll start telling you what’s going on. Until then, you get handled and fed what they think you want to hear.

To be clear, if you are not active and visible, you know how this stereotype ends:

The only time our leader comes around to our area is when ________.

The harsh reality of crushing it

Screen shot of marketing scam
Yesterday’s screen shot of a marketing scam.

In the screen shot message above, i can tell you as a highly paid motivational speaker, you are not going to be able to do this fast. Anyone promising fast results is someone you should avoid.

Our social media outlets portray a super savvy entrepreneur who is crushing it.

Right?

Behind closed doors it’s more like we are getting crushed.

Shhh, don’t tell anyone.

Here’s the issue. Everyone is trying to follow the recipes and formulas the gurus promise will lead to your quick, amazing results.

For every successful entrepreneur who’s cut the corporate cord and is going after the “work-from-home-Internet-based-startup” business, there are hundreds, maybe more, that live in this “getting crushed”world.

What’s missing from the  guru’s advice?

The truth.

And the truth is, there is no special formula. If there was, everyone would become “amazingly successful”. Quickly.

Usian Bolt and personal Leadership lessons

2015 World Championships 100m final

2015 World Championships 100m final
So close at the finish.

2015 World Championships 100m final
One one-hundredth of a second between gold and silver

While there where four Americans in yesterday’s 2015 World Championships 100 meter final, i was rooting for a Jamaican.

It doesn’t make me unpatriotic.

It makes me human.

Maybe that’s part of our challenge, we worry about how things have been done in the past.

What if sports were more about what’s possible (in this case winning three consecutive world championship titles) than what country we root for?

The thing about Usain Bolt is that he’s a great human being.

It’s easy for me to forget he’s a Jamaican. In fact, where he’s from doesn’t interest me.

His ability to become a category of one is the real story.

It inspires entrepreneurs and startups to believe that there is hope.

Hope is key.

One world.

One color.

One goal.

Peace.

Where is the finish line in the pursuit of excellence?

Disney Toy Story characters
2014 Walt Disney World Cast Member Service awards at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Think of the Disney animated classics from 1937 – 1995. Fifty-eight years worth of unprecedented animation.

Nearly six decades.

Have you ever looked back on your best accomplishments as a leader, professionally and personally?

i mean, spent serious time, without pressure and distraction?

Our best work doesn’t last, unless it’s timeless, and the odds of that happening are rare. Look at what Pixar’s Toy Story did with CGI.

Therefore, our best work has an expiration date.

It’s not fair.

But it is fair.

It’s not fair for everyone, thus the fairness.

At Disney, we are never satisfied.

This is Disney’s least talked about business secret.

Once we improve something, we start the (continuous) process to improve upon the improvement.

The road to excellence has no finish line.

If Disney ran your business, never being satisfied would be something you’d have to get used to.
