We work while others play.

Holidays, nights, weekends.

You are expected to have “full-availability”.

For your entire career.

Everyone at Disney gets this. Not everyone likes it. But you make a commitment to being on a world-class team and you do your part, like everyone else. Nights, weekends, holidays.

Only two folks i had never met before. Cheryl and i worked directly with many and indirectly with the rest. Ps. “Mickey and Minnie”, back row center.

Active and retired.

Once Disney, always Disney.

Always.

Ps. It’s a lifestyle choice. You don’t realize it in the beginning. It’s possible to go unnoticed during your career. But once you leave and look back, it’s totally a lifestyle choice.

DU & DI history montage

Disney Institute lisence plate and hat
Many people we saw at the DU/DI reunion started at Disney University. Disney Institute originally began at DU.

Cathy put this together. Twenty-eight minutes of Magical DU/DI memories…

Being in certain circles can be an interesting phenomenon.

During our 66 combined years of Disney service, we were never Disney social butterflies outside of work.

But a recent Saturday night put us in extraordinary company.

It was satisfying to be a quiet, but genuinely social observer.

High school reunion
Last night.

Once the music started, the talking stopped. Too loud.

It was awesome to see everyone.

Many knew i retired and asked how that’s going.

Had to remind them i retired from Disney, but not from working.

What type of leader have we become since high school?

work challenges
The answer to a brand manager’s top three daily time consuming tasks, in a LinkedIn messaging exchange.

old fashioned type writer
Imagine how much effort it was without spell check, cut & paste, and delete.

Fall trees in yellow
Blurry wasn’t intentional, but it’s a great metaphor to aging.

Disney Mickey Mouse image
The High School tour last night included seeing this poster outside the Music room.

Frank Zappa quote
Also outside the Music room…my personal favorite of the many posters i saw on the hour tour.

What type of leader have we become since high school?

Does this even cross our mind?

Should it?

Should it not?

Forty years is a lot of time to grow, to transform even.

But have we?

Are we better?

Or have we not?

Why?

Totally worth feeling amazing about our answer.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.
