Life is tough. Everyone is feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders. It’s the common thread for all humans.

Sent this last night, responding to request for advice…

“Thanks for your note and i do know your Grandfather and recall Cheryl going to lunch with you and your brother.

Judson, the greatest resource you have for the goals you describe is right under your nose. It’s your Disney leadership team. The one you had on your College Program and the one you have currently.

So here’s my best advice: Create great relationships with your leaders, their bosses (if possible, and it’s always possible), your peers, your Guests, vendors, everyone. Disney is famous for friendly, helpful, optimistic people. If that’s hard to do at the level you are at, it will be impossible to advance.

Every ring on the “leadership ladder” carries with it additional responsibilities that can bury people who aren’t equipped. So if this feels like hard work now, leadership might not be the right direction.

I’m assuming you were a standout at Cosmic Rays. Leverage those connections.

I retired almost two years ago and Cheryl’s position is in an exceptionally busy time right now.

Happy to answer any and all questions you have at any time.

Think of a mentor like a personal trainer. i can give advice from the expertise that comes from experience, yet i cannot do the exercises (the relationship building) for the trainee.

What books have you read about Disney? Send that list and i’ll recommend what’s missing and validate the great ones.

And if we aren’t connected on LinkedIn, please send an invitation.

Finally, expect an answer to any question within 24 hrs, usually same day, and often within hours. Future replies are not likely to be this long. 🙂

Be amazed and be amazing Judson. Our world needs more of that.

(PS, i didn’t proof this, sorry for grammar/typos)”

Disney creativity experiment on LinkedIn yesterday

The text in this photo sets the context for today’s post…

Disney Creativity jeff noel
This was inspired after having taken the risk to do my first Guest PodCast appearance.

Disney creativity experiment on LinkedIn yesterday:

Sean called in less than a minute. We spoke for an hour. He asked for advice, so i gave him exactly what i did to launch my business in 2009:

1. Don’t quit your day job

  • Life will be hard whether you work two jobs or are desperately trying to be discovered in only one job
  • Having a steady income takes pressure off and buys you time to develop your dream

2. Write publicly

  • Don’t expect any readers (except family) and don’t try to be perfect
  • This refines what you truly believe in and how you want to say it

3. Live in gratitude

  • Try being unhappy when you’re grateful
  • You, like everyone else, are in a hell, coming out of a hell, or about to enter a hell know one knows about; it can’t be an excuse or crutch

4. Set a compelling deadline

  • Accelerates decisions
  • Eliminates excuses

Sean’s story humbled and inspired me.

Thinking creatively at Disney is like breathing – no thought whatsoever.

i’m not doing it right

Best Disney Conference Keynote Speakers
Not dressed for the part.

So much hype. So little time.

Either i’m an anomaly, or there’s a lot of stuff that isn’t necessary in order to run an entrepreneurial business.

So much advice on what you should do to be successful, yet i do very little of it.

Business is growing nicely, even though on paper, i’m not doing it right.

Let’s rename advice to suggestion

Best Disney Keynote Speakers
True dat.

After my leadership keynote, a client told me he made a commitment to learn all the staff member’s names, because he realized not knowing was really poor leadership. Here’s my response:

Advice? Let’s rename it to suggestion, since you haven’t officially asked.

Five years ago i stopped all texting, emails and phone calls while driving. Our Son was ten. i didn’t reveal what i was doing for 90 days.

After three-plus months i asked him, while we were stopped at a red light, “Have you noticed anything different about me?”

He responded with, “Did you get your hair cut?”

We quickly got to the end goal.

He had noticed.

A lot.

By the time he gets his permit, he may not recall me texting and driving. My clear expectation that he never texts while driving will carry so much more weight, because there will be no double standard. People hate double standards. Betting you do. Your staff is no different.

My advice suggestion:

i wouldn’t announce what you are doing. At all. Just do it.

And while you’re doing it, sneak in a bit of casual conversation – getting to know them, but don’t make it seem like an interview or an interrogation. They’ll get suspicious and start talking about you behind your back.

They’re going to talk about you behind your back anyway, but if you do it right (intentionally), the buzz/rumors will be extraordinarily positive.

Go slow, be sincere, and find a million ways to stay motivated.
