Exercising different creativity because the pressure is off

Disney Institute keynote speakers
Last night’s writing location, less than one mile from WDW.

Couple of speaking inquiries in the past 72 hours.

As business grows, there’s less pressure and temptation to compromise corporate values – your organizational DNA.

Walt Disney and Steve Jobs inspire the heck out of me.

They were not everyone’s favorite leader.

Why?

They had insanely high standards and expectations.

Just another of many items a  startup CEO has to figure out.

Where are you going?

USATF HQ is in Indy…photo taken in the dark this morning while running,

Where are you going?

Why?

Have a great “why”, or it’s gonna be a long trip.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Leadership in nature can be astonishing

Bald Eagle dominating Vultures
Every Vulture backed off with the Eagle present.

Bald Eagle dominating Vultures
Every Vulture was in a frenzy when the Eagle was gone.

Leadership in nature can be astonishing.

Driving home from the Cross Country meet (and breakfast), 400 meters from our subdivision, the white head in a sea of black had me bring the car to a quick stop.

When i exited the car and walked a little closer, many of the vultures scattered. In the top photo try to image the Eagle surrounded by three times as many birds all packed tightly around the Eagle.

It was stunning.

The contrast.

The respect.

As soon as the Eagle flew away, all hell broke loose.

The analogies to real life rushed into my consciousness.

Disney’s Great Leader Strategies work anywhere

High school info board
Last night.

The first ever “Meet the Coaches” night at the 16-year old High School. This could be a leadership initiative from the brand new Athletic Director. Jake isn’t new to the school, his predecessor took a job elsewhere creating a promotional opportunity. Jake is filling it well.

Jake also instituted an all-digital athlete sports registration process, effectively moving to a paperless system.

At Disney, one of our Great Leader Strategies is to “Make Dramatic Leaps in Customer Service”. Jake demonstrates how this can be applied outside Disney’s walls.

Big Horn Sheep at Logan Pass
Six Big Horn Sheep at Logan Pass. They look like rocks with legs. Decent chance you can’t spot them.

Big Horn Sheep at Logan Pass
Six Big Horn Sheep never came any closer than this photo.

Six Big Horn sheep descended from their high-altitude base camp. We sat at the parking lot’s edge, hoping they’d cross close by. It was fun to watch the motorists try to sneak a five-second view as they drove by.

The second-hand benefit from an early arrival and a parking space is that we watched the Big Horn Sheep for 15 minutes.
