i never let that happen, except yesterday

Disney Keynote speaker
Awaiting an intimate group of the seven top company executives. Take note of the five blank posters on the far wall.

Disney management Consultant
Revealed these posters one by one after the content was revealed during the slide presentation.

i resisted doing it, and told the CEO why. But i did it anyway as a favor to the CIO who recommended me – he is also a former client from Disney Institute.

i was justified in not wanting to do a “sales presentation”.

At best i give myself a C (average).

My goal is never anything less than an A+.

Five core topics with a total of 19 strategies, plus two 10-15 minute activities was impossible in 60 minutes, my allowed time.

i went over by 10 minutes and used a verbal Uzi to spray as much content as possible – for their benefit.

i opened and closed with activity, there was none for the 40-minute middle chuck.

i never let that happen.

Except yesterday.

Magic Kingdom Barber Shop
In the classroom, i always talk about the balance between pixie dust and reality. Reality is quite harsh sometimes.

David Wong’s 2012 manifesto: 6 Harsh Truths That Will Make You A Better Person is filled with profanity, humor, guilt, and insight. Warning, the article is full of profanity. If profanity offends you or if rampant profanity will paralyze you from being open to the deeper message behind the post, i recommend you don’t click through. And the first paragraph (below) is the only one without profanity. One final thing, there’s a video in #3 that i couldn’t watch because i found it disgusting…i highly recommend skipping it. (So disgusting that i almost canceled this post. And that’s part of the message – we are not going to like everything the world puts before us – yet some of life’s most important messages are only found there.)

PS. Compared to the video (your clue before you click on it is the guy in a speedo and a blue cape), i saw a news story last night about a 15-year old who was wrongly imprisoned for murder. Weeks after his sentencing, the real killer confessed to the five murders. Unfortunately, the young man spent nine years imprisoned before finally being set free. That story makes me sick to my stomach and makes the obnoxious video seem irrelevant.

Here’s the first paragraph:

Feel free to stop reading this if your career is going great, you’re thrilled with your life, and you’re happy with your relationships. Enjoy the rest of your day, friend, this article is not for you. You’re doing a great job, we’re all proud of you. So you don’t feel like you wasted your click, here’s a picture of Lenny Kravitz wearing a gigantic scarf.

This is for the leaders who were too busy to notice

Photo from yesterday. Post from 100 days ago…

This is for the leaders (including me) who were too busy to notice.

Knowing that my self-imposed deadline for death living is exactly three years from June 8, i will have to balance patience with a termination point.

No easy task.

Living with a deadline creates a profoundly deep sense of self-reflection.

This illuminates the perceived need for cathartic behaviors. Otherwise we are faced with the reality of living dying with regret.

There is no manual for the exact way to proceed.

(And because there is no guide, this is why society, in general, waits and does nothing with their big, bold, humble dreams.)

So i may say and do some things that with more time, might not feel necessary (like this post). But i don’t have the luxury of waiting to find out.

Vision

Nursing Home employee time clock
The biggest excuse is time.

Vision.

If you can’t see the future in a clear, concise, and compelling way, imagine how the people you lead have to squint.

This applies whether you are the CEO, a division or department head, a middle manager, or a front line leader. it also applies to every single able minded adult because we are the CEO of You, Inc.

Perhaps the best investment in your time this year is creating a clear, concise, and compelling vision of the future.

Congratulations on your retirement

Farmer's fence
Sunrise through fog on Christmas morning. Notice the right side lone stalk of grass?

Farmer's fence
Closer inspection. Such a masterpiece.

Congratulations on your retirement…Thanks. i’m still working though. Doing the same thing at Disney, but on my own. i have the (intentional) ability to work anywhere, anytime – even from Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, even on Christmas day.
