Wait and pay, wait, and wait some more

First, remember exiting off the Interstate and then the long drive through Disney property (wilderness really) before arriving at the toll plaza?

What’s next?

You wait in line to pay for parking.

Then you wait in line to park.

Then you wait in line to board the parking lot tram.

Then you wait in line to buy Theme Park admission tickets.

Wait in line some more to board the Monorail or the Ferry Boat to Magic Kingdom.

Walt used the hospital room ceiling tiles as a map

Disney Institute Keynote Speaker
The vision is a group shot. The character placement happens organically.

“In this square mile we’re gonna do this. In that square mile we’re going to do that.”

The night Walt Disney died, his brother Roy was there. Roy recounted Walt saying the first sentence (above).

Roy was 71. Roy was a retired citizen when Walt died.

A smarter man would have sold the 27,443 acres.

We bought it cheap, we could sell it cheap.

The alligator, snake, and mosquito-infested swampland was purchased at roughly $200/acre.

Besides, there was no way you could build the vacation capital of the world in such a remote and swampy place.

Bob Iger’s contract expires in one year

Daytona Beach Hard Rock Hotel
The World’s Most Famous Beach is it’s claim to fame.

The Disney culture, and maintaining it, is my number one priority.  – Michael Eisner (1984)

Bob Iger’s contract expires in one year – July 7, 2019.

Bob took over for Michael Eisner in 2005.

Michael ran Disney for 21 years, from 1984 – 2005.

i was there for all of it, and then some – finally retiring on Halloween (pretty scary) 2014.

In fact, Michael, my wife Cheryl, and i were all hired on the same day as permanent Cast Members.

Also, i spent eight months as a (full-time) seasonal Cast Member in 1982.

Bob has graciously extended his CEO contract several times since July 2015.

We have yet to identify the next Disney CEO.

Fingers crossed for some incredible Magic between now and July 7, 2019.

Pixie Dust versus Reality

Disney leadership speaker
Pixie dust vs reality.

Pixie Dust versus Reality.

The truth?

Yes, please.

Ok.

You should sit down for this.

Pixie Dust and hard work (focus and discipline) are synonymous.

But non-Disney business professionals attending Disney Institute multi-day courses or keynote speeches never want to believe it comes down to focus and discipline.

So i coined the phrase, “Pixie Dust versus Reality”, as a segue to a candid conversation which serves as the catalyst for a blunt personal inventory about beliefs, effort, and results.

It makes honest people uncomfortable – in a good way.

It makes pessimists and naysayers spout excuses – so predictably.

It’s not the Magic that makes it work, it’s the hard work that makes it Magic.

PS. Indebted to Mary Flynn for her writing genius.

Emotion trumps everything

Disney leadership speaker
Emotion trumps everything.

Emotion trumps everything.

Customers are deciding whether you love them or not, every time they interact with your organization.

When they feel something uniquely special from your organization, brand loyalty is strengthened.

When customers sense a non-committed employee, process or facility, loyalty is eroded.
