The way at work

Homeowner driveway framed before concrete pour
The three-plus-decade wait for a paved driveway is about to end. Patience is a leadership asset.

The way at work is simple: over-focus on the same things others under-focus on or ignore. Become intentional with everything.

Become intentional with taking the long way as your shortcut.

Become intentional honing your habits by design, not default.

And then what, at work?

Tree root exposed
Photo of insanely long tree root. A tree’s roots mirror its canopy. Easy to forget. Easy to never know.

You work a lifetime doing what you love, then what?

You start and run a successful solo business for many years, then what?

You retire, then what?

You hate your career choices, then what?

You can’t imagine ever not working, then what?

If only, at work

PowerPoint slide with dozens of words
If you counted the words, how many are there? And then ask yourself, is someone talking (reading these aloud) while most are reading the words?

What if an Apple Product Announcement Conference presentation slide had 76 words on a single slide?

What if Tim Cook was reading the slide to the audience?

What would you think about Apple’s (or Tim Cook’s) brand for simple and innovative?

Group solitude?

Half dozen hikers deep in the wilderness
We were the only ones at this mountain pass. Five miles from the nearest mountain road. About 60 miles from anything close to resembling a normal road.

Can you enjoy solitude in a group?

Depends.

On what?

Where you are.

Huh?

If there are nine of you at 7,500’ elevation and literally no one else on the one-million acres surrounding your group, then yes.

Legacy vs Innovation

Note card about innovation
The safety, effectiveness, and efficiency statistics are staggering between a roundabout versus a four-way stop. Yet four-way stops prevail.

Are you comfortable with the status quo?

Are you comfortable with being uncomfortable?

By the way, growth mindset thrives on making your comfort zone being uncomfortable.

If you are willing to take consistent, calculated risks, the world opens up to you in a way playing it safe never will.
