Ready to walk away?

Ready to walk away?

Yes.

Told the CEO last Friday that i’ve grown weary in waiting because the waiting translates into a lack of commitment.

It’s been 19 months since we met.

If this is what it’s like when we don’t have a contract, what will it be like when (if) we do?

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

How much work?

Book publishing first steps
Flashback to making the commitment to publish my first book. PS. Didn’t use the software above, but it was one of the ones i considered.

How much work are you willing to do to get there?

Be specific about the tradeoffs.

You know how people say you should never quit your day job? i worked over six years at two-plus hours a day, everyday, without missing a day – on top of my full-time Disney Institute career traveling nearly every week.

Without any sales experience, without having a passion for sales

Windermere Prep boys Basketball
Regionals at home. The win advanced our school to the State Semi-finals.

Is there a way to become a salesperson, without having any sales experience, and without having a passion for sales?

And if the answer is yes to both, is it possible to rewrite how to sell?

Cultural transformation to move from decently surviving to abundantly thriving revolves around which of the two questions we embrace:

  1. Is it worth trying to do?
  2. Can it be done?

Almost always the belief – with a litany of excuses – will be that it can’t be done.

It’s not that i refuse to do these… #thinkdifferently

It’s not that i refuse to do these or that i don’t see the value; however, i don’t do any of them.

Blogging is supposed to lead to traffic and traffic is supposed to create a funnel from which your business will flow. Makes sense, so almost everyone does these standard recipe-for-success tactics:

1. Have an email subscription sign up for a newsletter or blog
2. Entice sign-ups with a CTA (call to action) using a free asset give-away.
3. Use videos
4. Do not share your prices publicly
5. Have a slick website with lots of bells and whistles
6. Freely share your best content
7. Automate your social media sharing

So how did that play out in the first year of Disney retirement? If the only metric we use is revenue (because it’s typical), it was the best year of my life.

i only preach what i practice. And i preach to people who don’t want to be the best in their category, they want to become the category.

Sure it’s risky. But so is following the herd.

PS. i blog a lot (13k posts since 2009), but i don’t do it to drive business. On my speaker site, it’s almost impossible to find my blog. Why? Because it’s a personal blog.

Be intentional about turning people away

Disney's Boardwalk Resort art
Oh look, a real live miniature horse in the palm of his hand. Photo: Disney’s Boardwalk Resort lobby art, yesterday.

Say this to yourself (a couple time if necessary)…

i do not copy what’s out there and i am never going to please everyone.

The biggest commitment you will ever make is this one:

Do i want to be the best in the category or do i want to be the category?

Setting the bar low and reaching it is not the same as setting it ridiculously high, failing, but knowing you gave everything.
