Here’s Who Wins

It's Who You Know
It's Who You Know

The person who works harder and longer than anyone else wins.

Life may seem unfair, personally or professionally.

But actually, life is fair.

What doesn’t seem fair is how hard we need to work to survive and thrive.

If you want the job, it’s simple, you must be the best person out of all the others.

You must bring with you more of what they want than any of the other candidates.

And sometimes, it’s the relationship piece, not the technical qualification, that is the most important.

Figure it out.

What Are You Worth?

Deer In The Headlights?
Deer In The Headlights?

Most people are afraid to ask this question.

And if they do have the courage to answer it, most likely, it’s an inflated view.

Why is this?

It’s because we place the value on two things that are not relevant:

  1. What we did in the past
  2. What we intend to do in the future

Take a look at the stock market, or baseball.

Past performance and future goals may be indicators, but they are far from perfect math.

What are you doing right now that makes you indispensable?

Right now, today, what makes you the clear choice, the most expensive valuable choice?

Being a (great) leader makes you a target.  A target for small minds to nit-pick your faults and missteps.

Better get used to, eh?

Humans are perfectly imperfect. You know what I’m talking about, right?  Good.

Case in point:

The previous two days, on a New Mexico business trip, I had a misstep each morning. I’m committed to starting every single day on my knees. No exceptions.

The first day, it was only 7:30AM when I realized I had forgotten, and found a quiet place.

Yesterday, it was 7:30PM, as I pulled into our driveway.

So I went over to our canine (Pet) son’s grave and finished the day on my knees.

There are some things we should be flexible on and some we shouldn’t.

As a leader, are you clear about which is which, and why?
