Finding Our Passion

Saturday, February 6th, 2010
Fortune What?

Fortune What?

Finding our passion and pursuing our dreams with sheer determination is something we all dream about.

When is the best time to ease off the dreaming and ramp up the doing? It really depends. There’s so much to consider. So much to take into account.

Have you given up?

Eventually, most people give up. I almost did too. Then a small child was born. He changed my life and my purpose. He was and is the catalyst that inspires me to work tirelessly.

Over time, my five daily blogs have slowly, but surely been getting better. It’s funny sometimes, to think that many readers have no idea how hard I work in my professional position with a Fortune 100 company.

All this blogging is extra. Ya with me? Extra. What are you doing that’s extra? That’s hard?  That’s difficult? That you love so much you can’t stop?

My blogs are so basic and simple it’s almost embarrassing.  When there’s some “spare” time, I’ll be looking to take another step to jazz up the blogs.  I’ll be clicking here for more Wordpress Theme tips.

Do you let what you can’t do stop you from what you can?

Freakonomics And Sam Horn

I Love Freakonomics

I Love Freakonomics

You’ve probably heard of Freakonomics.

You probably have not heard of Sam Horn.

I met Sam Horn on LinkedIn.

Sam Horn loves quotes.  jeff noel loves quotes. In fact, jeff noel is addicted to quotes.

Sam feeds quotes to quote-addicted people like me.

She also speaks and writes.  And Sam Horn does them well, very well.

And if you have any common sense at all, you’ll trust me and click here to read this New York Times summary of her book, Tongue Fu.

I have six new ideas from reading this brief, but compelling angle to crafting your pitch, your elevator speech. Seriously.

Speaking of Fear

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Dear jungle jeff readers, you probably know this, but jungle jeff is just one of five daily blogs that I write.

After speaking of fear yesterday here at jungle jeff, a few minutes later I posted an important jeff noel blog post.

And the topic at jeffnoel.com yesterday was the antithesis of the one here at jungle jeff.

Is it okay to notice personal growth and use that confidence to make a dramatic leap in progress?

One thing for sure, I’m not afraid to find out.

Manner Of Speaking Blog

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Manner of Speaking WordPress blog.  It’s a good one.  Click here to check it out.

If you have no interest in Public Speaking, that’s ok.  May I offer this different perspective for still paying attention to this jungle jeff blog post?

As a Professional Speaker, sometimes a “sports story” is appropriate. There are people however, that will immediately turn off and tune out.  Why?  Well for starters, they’ll say things like:

  • “I don’t like sports”.
  • “I never played sports”.
  • “I don’t watch sports”.
  • “I hate sports”.

So let me just say this, when I tell a “sports story”, it’s not about sports, it’s about excellence.  When I blog about public speaking, it’s not about public speaking as much as it is about passion, and the pursuit of excellence – in any endeavor.

That’s why you should pay attention.  “You can observe a lot by watching”. – Yogi Berra

Stories Make It Stick

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Three things Lee Cockerell told me when I asked his advice on public speaking, in 1999:

  1. Be passionate
  2. Tell stories
  3. Use personal examples

Here’s a fourth tip.  Benchmark.  Click here to do that right now.

Make your day GREAT.  It’s up to you.  Always has been.  Always will be.  Be inspired. Or not.

National Speakers Association

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Public speakers who get paid are called Professional Speakers. Professional Speakers who become certified through The National Speakers Association are designated as CSP – Certified professional Speaker.

Public speaking is the greatest fear humans have, even greater than the fear of dying.  Mastering this fear has certain benefits that are challenging to explain.

If you are an accomplished or an aspiring Professional Speaker, NSA is guaranteed to help you succeed, no matter your current skill level.

Mantra, Mantra, Mantra

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Mantra, mantra, mantra.

From Wikipedia:  A mantra is a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that are considered capable of “creating transformation” (cf. spiritual transformation).[1] Their use and type varies according to the school and philosophy associated with the mantra.

I will not be discouraged.

I will not be discouraged.

I will not be discouraged.

There will be  times when you think the path you’re on – the one you convinced yourself and others was absolutely the way – may actually be wrong.

This is why courage and perseverance were invented.

Keynote Speaker Phillip Van Hooser

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Disney fans, jungle jeff readers, Executives, Leaders, entrepreneurs, and everyone else visiting jungle jeff today, I’ve got a special opportunity for you.

It is my distinct pleasure to introduce you to Phillip Van Hooser, MBA, CSP, CPAE, and President Elect – The National Speaker’s Association (NSA).

The reason I feel so compelled to do this is because I met Phil, and got to know him, at the 2009 NSA Winter Conference at The Walt Disney World Resort a few months ago.

I particularly want to share his June 15 blog post entitled, The Truth About Managing Change.

Phil’s blog post on managing change struck a chord with me, when I read this excerpt:

“A transformational leadership approach says, “It’s already broken, or it’s going to break. How can we seize the opportunities we have now to make it better?”

In these turbulent times, we have the opportunity to use a level of creativity and innovation that rarely, if ever, gets tapped.

Creativity involves risk.  Risk jeopardizes consistency.  Consistency is the hallmark of quality service.  Quality service is how you build your brand.

If your brand is actually your reputation, you might go as far as saying that your very reputation is on the line.

Scary, eh?

Our rewards in life are directly linked to the level of creativity, and it’s inherent risk, we demonstrate.

I hope you have time to visit Phil’s website, view a few of his videos and read his blog.  If you are looking for inspiration and practical ideas, you won’t have to look far.

Make it a GREAT day, because if you don’t, who will?  If not today, when?  Carpe diem, jungle jeff :)

Can public speaking make you a better leader?

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Speaking in front of others is something every leader must do, and should do well. The better you become at public speaking, the better you become as a leader. It’s intuitive that this makes sense, right?

Today’s post is actually an entry on my “National Speakers Associationpage, so you’d be unlikely to read it without this convenient link:

http://junglejeff.net/?page_id=103

The top ten list will save you time, because I’ve highlighted the best of the best. I composed the top ten list from memory – meaning, after three weeks, here are the key take-aways. They help me and they will most likely help you.

Great leaders know the value of being able to convey their vision, mission and brand. Great leaders create a compelling picture of the future. One that inspires passion and interest, and clearly communicates the organization’s values.

Make it a GREAT day, because if you don’t, who will? Carpe diem, jungle jeff :)

One word to describe the National Speaker’s Association’s Winter Conference at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida?

WOW!

Why WOW?

World-class presenters.  Cutting edge information.  Inspiration.  Great sense of community.   Commited Leadership.  Entrepreneurial spirit.  Discovering possibilities.  Hope.  Laughter.  Palm trees, sunshine and Mickey Mouse.    Does it get any better than this?

What began on Thursday afternoon, will end after Sunday’s Keynote.

To those of you I’ve had the privilege to meet and get to know, thank you for your time, passion, sharing, advice, inspiration.   Looking forward to continuing these friendships in spite of our insanely busy schedules.  We can.  We will.  If we all work together.   Know who said that?  Tell you later.

A dream is a wish your heart makes.  Sweet dreams.

jungle jeff  :)
