Are You Serious?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Are you serious about becoming better at what you do?

I’m guessing that most people will answer, “Of course”.

Gonna call your bluff.  Most people, and perhaps you’re the exception, just don’t have it in them to do the hard work .

They have the dream, the desire, the will, but something is missing.

The demands on our time are literally all-consuming. This simple fact makes it hard to stay focused.

When we lack excellent focus, our results are less than our expectations.  When this happens, we begin to doubt ourselves.  How do I know?  Because I’m just like every body else.  Just like you.

The one difference I’ve found that most others haven’t?  Tomorrow. I’ll share it tomorrow.

Manner Of Speaking Blog

Manner of Speaking WordPress blog.  It’s a good one.  Click here to check it out.

If you have no interest in Public Speaking, that’s ok.  May I offer this different perspective for still paying attention to this jungle jeff blog post?

As a Professional Speaker, sometimes a “sports story” is appropriate. There are people however, that will immediately turn off and tune out.  Why?  Well for starters, they’ll say things like:

  • “I don’t like sports”.
  • “I never played sports”.
  • “I don’t watch sports”.
  • “I hate sports”.

So let me just say this, when I tell a “sports story”, it’s not about sports, it’s about excellence.  When I blog about public speaking, it’s not about public speaking as much as it is about passion, and the pursuit of excellence – in any endeavor.

That’s why you should pay attention.  “You can observe a lot by watching”. – Yogi Berra

Stories Make It Stick

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Three things Lee Cockerell told me when I asked his advice on public speaking, in 1999:

  1. Be passionate
  2. Tell stories
  3. Use personal examples

Here’s a fourth tip.  Benchmark.  Click here to do that right now.

Make your day GREAT.  It’s up to you.  Always has been.  Always will be.  Be inspired. Or not.

National Speakers Association

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Public speakers who get paid are called Professional Speakers. Professional Speakers who become certified through The National Speakers Association are designated as CSP – Certified professional Speaker.

Public speaking is the greatest fear humans have, even greater than the fear of dying.  Mastering this fear has certain benefits that are challenging to explain.

If you are an accomplished or an aspiring Professional Speaker, NSA is guaranteed to help you succeed, no matter your current skill level.

jungle jeff – The Wellness Fanatic?

Masters World Championships, Finland

Masters World Championships, Finland

jungle jeff is absolutely a wellness fanatic.  Most don’t realize this.  Why would they realize it?  Why should they?

I started with one push-up per day for a week and then each new week, add one more push-up per day.  After six weeks, that’s six push-ups per day.

Also started running one mailbox per day for a week and then each new week added another mailbox.  After six weeks, I was running past six mailboxes.  Then walked back.

Through continuous improvement techniques learned at work (fortune 100 company), managed my boredom, injuries, motivation and goals – and after a decade, guess what happened this past Summer?

From one push-up per day ten years ago, to representing the USA at the WMA Master’s Track & Field World Championships in Lahti, Finland.  Men’s 400 meters, 50 – 54 age group.

So, excellence can be attained in virtually anything, but you have to be willing to set an impossible goal, work incredibly hard and never give up.  Ya with me?

If you don’t have a blog, that’s OK, the article probably won’t mean much to you or your business.

Blogging is much easier and much more impactful than you think.

There are early adopters, laggards, and the people in between (the mass consumption). To be world class in business, you have to out work your competition.  Anyone think that’s possible without the Internet?  Without Social Media?

If so, there’s a place reserved for you in the museum, not far from the T-Rex exhibit.

OnStartUps. Ever heard of them?  Click here to see a list of entrepreneurs that are changing things.

Many years ago, I found myself driving Ken Blanchard to the airport. We had 30 minutes to talk.  And I was smart enough, even back then, to do most of the listening.  One of the things that has stayed with me all these years was something very simple that Ken Blanchard said:

“You can watch the parade.  You can march in the parade.  Or, you can lead the parade”.

I think about hometown Halloween parades this time of year, with High School Marching Bands and Drum & Bugle Corps.  Do you?  Can you picture watching a home town parade?  Ever march in one?  Ever lead one?

Entrepreneurs change things.  And they are leaders.  Remember Rosa Parks.  I’d like to testify that Rosa Parks was an entrepreneur.   “I rest my case, your honor”.

How big are your dreams?  How much courage (guts) do you possess?  What are you gonna do today?

Is This A Purple Cow?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Seth Godin’s book, Purple Cow, is about how to be remarkable.  If you’ve ever flown before, you know what a flight attendant does.

Or do you:

OK, I’ve seen a ton of flight attendants. There are the traditional items that must be covered.

But how there are covered has yet to be defined, or may never be defined. This Southwest Airlines Flight attendant is remarkable.

Bottom line:  in a highly competitive world, playing it safe is risky.
